Came to Australia in 2001 and the wife’s family and friends were mostly Essendon supporters. Before it was decided I was looking at the teams and wondering who I’d support. Carlton and Hawthorn were options, before the decision was taken out of my hands. So it all worked out in the end.
I was looking for some good music to listen too, stumbled across the Blonde DJ thread.
Found ■■■■ music and a ■■■■ club
one of if not my earliest memories, is sitting on my dads shoulders walking up to the stadium in the 85 semi or grand final, cannot remember which, can just remember it wasn’t just a normal game and the crowd of people around me were laughing and everyone really enjoying themselves, i remember feeling that people seemed really hopeful and joyful and the mood was really upbeat and happy
I was too young to really understand about clubs and supporters and teams etc… but I remember that moment as my first impression of what footy meant to it’s supporters in the red and black
When I was a little older, my grandpa gave me this scarf to seal the deal, and i’ve worn it to every game since, the retro bomber and the memories of my pa that comes along with it, i just treasure, and will until i hand it across to my son or daughter one day
literally the worst time in our entire history to pick Essendon!
Glad your enjoying being part of the club tho!
My Dad went to just about every Essendon game in Melbourne even after I was born. By early 2001 my pre-school self started to understand what football was and asked to watch the matches on TV that Dad would go to. Of course, almost every time I watched the delayed FTA broadcast, Essendon won convincingly (or were until I fell asleep for the night games).
My first game in person was Freo at Colonial in 2001. I could barely see what was happening but I remember the crowd were agitated that we didn’t win by a larger margin. “Too much handball!” they said.
Second game was Sydney at Colonial in the same season. I remember slightly more about this one but admittedly that’s been helped by many re-watches of the last qtr. This was the one where Alessio kicked the winning goal with seconds remaining and the crowd went ape.
I think I was a convert before those two games anyway but who knows how much difference actually losing those games would have had? Essendon WERE the best team according to the ladder so of course I was happy to choose Essendon.
Sadly choosing Essendon at that time was just about the worst timing possible and it’s been mostly disappointment ever since. Couldn’t imagine supporting any other club though. The rest are all dead to me after the saga if they weren’t already before then. Just hope we aren’t the next St Kilda so I’ll at least see one flag.
Spent my first 6 years of life in Niddrie, before going to live overseas.
All the family are Essendon supporters. The ones that care about footy, anyway.
Wow…so C o o l get’s censored now
