persevere with GRIM
I think the problem is this.To get the right mix up front in future JD needs to start part time rucking, he is too tall to be a sole fwd as it effects our structure.
We canāt have him and another big ruck/fwd in our fwd line as the only kpfās. Then we end up being forced to put 4 smalls around them, and JD then gets triple teamed, especially when main ruck on bench and ruck relief in centre.
With him fwd/ruck we then play two other actual forwards around him. This also has the effect of JD getting a lesser defender, or allowing the other fwds to get a lesser defender.
Flag winners of last 3 years had 3 ātallā setup of:
Hawks - Roughead, Gunston, Hale (f/r)ā¦
With 3 class smalls around them. Breust, Rioli, Poppy
If you select the 4 highest scoring teams in league at the moment their 3 ātallā setups are as follows:
- Adel - Tex, Lynch, Jenkins (f/r)
- North - Petrie, Waite, Brown (f/r)
- GWS - Patton, Cameron, Lobb (f/r)
- Geel - Hawkins, Kersten, Vardy (f/r)
The coaching staff have recognised that we need more players up forward to help Joe. We have tried last week with:
Daniher, Brown, Grimley (f/r)
Brown actually was dangerous when Joe got out of the fwd line making space and dragging the best defender away. Grimley got isolation and jagged a few too.
The problem is Daniher and Grimley are both ineffectual at putting pressure on. And Brown is hardly cat like at ground level. That combined with our lack of small forward pressure, pace and quality means the ball rebounds out at rate of knots.
Grimley is terrible in ruck and does nothing much around the ground so Smack has to come in IMO who has far more intensity and can stick a tackle.
Next year what I hope to see is:
Hooker, 3rd tall, Daniher (f/r)
3rd tall needs to be very very capable at ground level, excellent overhead and has goal nouse.
For that 3rd tall you would just kill to be able to add Jack Riewoldt into the setup. Or Jack Darling. Or Jake Stringer, and Dogs have both he and Crameri now.
North have hit jackpot on Waite as a free agent, Adelaide too on Lynch. Cameron McCarthy we went after last year but couldnāt get off GWS and he will end up at Freo now anyway.
On our list that player already could well be Laverde, or it might also be Francis. Dodoro suggested they were going to play Francis fwd, such an explosive player, his overhead marking phenomenal and just a competitive beast who wonāt get beaten one on one.
Imagine him having pushed away his opponent doubling back and leaping over a wrestling Hooker and his defender 10m out from goal clunking marks.
⦠But for this year now given we donāt have Hooker and probably want to protect JD from the ruck still all we are left with is to persist with is either a setup we running now of:
Daniher, Brown, Grimley (f/r)
Or trial adding in Smack, Michael, Laverde or Francis when the latter two fit.
And move Joe out to CHF where he has space and isnāt getting double and triple teamed close to goal. Also forces our mids not to bomb long to him.
JD being a chop out kick on the wings for our defenders or taking marks across half forward and hand balling off to mids streaming past or holding up things allowing us to setup a press should help a lot.
This week:
Fantasia Smack Brown
Langford Daniher Cooney
2017:Eades Hooker Francis
Laverde Daniher Colyer
This. persevere with GRIM though
I've got it. Has anyone got a time machine ?
no lucas or lloyd?
They were both 7 when that forwardline played togetherā¦so no !
even though they were 7, theyd probably still be useful in the 2016 forward line
Itās not 1983.
I knew we would regret delisting Alwyn DaveyNorth struggled after Carey left too. Take the CHF out of any team and they will struggle.
It's not 1983.You disappoint me if you think THAT forwardline is from 1983, particularly since Baker's first season was 1984.
Laverde was looking pretty ā ā ā ā ā ā dangerous, as a pseudo tall for the quarter and a half his shoulder stayed in against Geelong. Just sayin'
I agree. Hence I still had him in preferred forward setup for 2017.
Completely forgot about Redman however, so assuming having Francis back playing 3rd tall defender instead Iād have:
F: Eades Hooker Laverde
HF: Redman Daniher Colyer
first we take manhattenthen we take berlin.
Theyāve sentenced us to twenty years of boredom?

Thereās probably not a great deal of difference these days, but Colyer really needs to be on a wing.
Though I believe there is a chap called Ainsworth that might fill your vacant position nicely.
Never seen him, but by God do I want him !
Mark Baguely forward pocket, not sure what heās like in front of goal but he has everything else going for him.

Isnāt Francis a backman? Why would we recruit another backman to become a forward?
Isn't Francis a backman? Why would we recruit another backman to become a forward?
Francis is a bit of everything. A utility.
It seems to me that with our 18 players mostly in the back two thirds of the ground, competing against 15, with the other 3 opposition players goal side, we get 1 or 2 goals a week when one of our speedsters sneaks through. In addition we usually get 1 or 2 goals from precise ball movement, carving our way up the ground. In addition we usually get 3 to 5 goals from āchaosā balls in the forward line. Lastly we get 1or 2 goals from a froward leading up field and taking a mark. That gives 6 to 11 goals a week. Thatās the impression I have of our forward results. Itās almost as if weāre playing to limit damage on the score board, not to win the match.

Without wanting to be too much ofā¦
Anyway, Josh Kennedy says hi.
I was actually thinking during the goalless drought in the game against fark carlton that maybe both teams should have left the players at the end of the ground they were at for the next quarter - ie forwards become backs and vice versa for both teams. They couldnāt have done much worse a job, could they? Iād back Hartley to have kicked goals on Casboultā¦
There is no quick solution to this problem. We need better forwards.
Coaching and players.
Our leading patterns and game movement are not in sync, not predictable and seemingly often āmade upā as we go along. Compare that to the top offenses where the midfielders know where the forwards will be even before they start the lead. Often an adelaide mid (for example) will kick to āspaceā, knowing that Tex Walker is about 2 seconds away from pushing off his man to hit that hole. That kind of precision only comes from consistent coaching, players knowing what to do and then having the skills (both the leader and kicker) to execute.
The next problem is finding a second True key forward to pair with Daniher. We tried Hurley and Carlisle⦠no dice⦠now we look like trying Hooker but imho we should be throwing the sink plus more at a guy like Patton, someone who is a natural forward. However we could almost survive with another key forward if we could, for all things holy, recruit a smart small forward who can crumb and kick goals.
So once you have you leading patterns sorted and the right players⦠then it is simply about maintaining structure, discipline and skills and we should see our scoring improve.
Right now I hold little hope of being able to consistently score over 60pts for a long long time.
Stop drafting backman and get some natural goal kickers might help.
Iād consider plonking Sam Michael at FF and tell him to stay inside 50 and monster blokes in front of goal. Canāt hurt to try at this point.
Maybe even try out how two different style forward lines function.
Say a taller marking one.
Stokes Smack Ambrose
Langford Daniher McKenna
Or a smaller running one
Stokes Ambrose McKenna
Eades Daniher Long
The good news that the effectiveness of the forward line in 2016 is still at 2015 levels!!!! Nothing has changed.
If thatās the good news then spare the bad.
