Hugh IS This McLuggage and How Many Brownlow?

Its been said that McGrath is dynamic , athletic ( hurdler) very fit and good. Clugg didnt have a pre-season is a bit puffy, and needs to get in shape. But in spite of these major differences, Clugg is putting in performances that have him at #1 - #2 draft pick.

So the question is, how much better will Clugg be when his body is tuned up , Is McGrath much closer to his performance ceiling? There may be more upside to Clug than McGrath, in which case I would go for him.

So what does Dodoro think ? He has 6 weeks to make up his mind , by which time this thread will have run to about 150+ pages.

Soā€¦McGrath is good, and McClug is puffy??
Iā€™m afraid these are not approved football descriptors.

hahahahaā€¦ahhhhhā€¦that narrows it down, then.

I gave in and watched his VicM and SA 'highlights' vids. Most impressive imo was actually his centre square appearances. Looks able to read the play and run into the pill at the right moment. Instinctive gives by hand under pressure actually remind me of Darcy. Sure ball handling. Kicking action is slightly awkward but will improve imo.. But if he goes forward and nails goals every week then its just fine as-is anyway.

No preseason. Excellent timing around the ball. Good vision and willing to take the difficult option. Wins centre clearances and hits the scoreboard. Classy mover that must be quicker than his gait would suggest.

Lets not outsmart ourselves. This kid is a genuine footballer, not just an athlete and certainly Not getting by on advanced physical development. A ball finder who is dangerous on the scoreboard as well. And heā€™s literally the antithesis of Melksham at U18 level - consistently good week after week.

NOT much not to like imo.

I think McCluggage will need a good development program to elevate him to an elite player.

McGrath could play anywhere in the league, with a poor development program and will still strive.

Im not saying he has to be pick 1, fwiw. I have nothing to compare him against. But i like that he seems a real oldschool footballer re movement and reading the footy.

I am sure theres an ā€œIdiots Guide to Footy Speakā€ out there but I refuse to read it.

Yep. Iā€™m not sure heā€™s the one Iā€™d take, but heā€™s like Parish, a footballer first and an athlete second. And thatā€™s good thing imo.

Who are you leaning towards Boot? McGrath as well?

I keep changing my mind HD.
At the moment Iā€™m leaning towards Brodie.
But Iā€™m sure another breeze will come up and Iā€™ll be leaning in some other direction soon enough.
I started with SPS, moved to McAntler, moved on to Taranto, and am of now of course on to Brodie.
Probably revisit them all as my choice before itā€™s over.
There are some ā– ā– ā– ā– ā– ā–  good young footballers available when you hold pick 1.

In last years draft we were lucky the first 2-3 picks were for KPPs , so the good mids fell through to 4 (Oliver), 5 ( Darce) and 7 ( Hopper)
This year we get first shot at one of the best 3 mids. If Francis can build a tank, with 2 potential big bodies from 2014 we might build a midfield dynasty in 3 years

Its some form of compensation for the xxxx of the last 4 years.

I think thereā€™s a better correlation between draft position and skilful midfielders, than there is between clearance specialists and draft position.

If weā€™ve got pick 1, Iā€™d rather go for the skilful midfielder.

Presuming that Brodie is more of an extractor.

Of course Clug wants to come to Essendon. The way itā€™s looking the next Melbourne club to have a pick will be St Kilda at pick 10.

Brodie,
ā€œThe Extractorā€

Based on his build heā€™s never been to a gym in his life.

Just a hunch but I reckon we have McGrath & McCluggage marginally ahead of the next few, which might be why Dodoro isnā€™t super keen on trading pick 1 at this stage.

A real shame that Clug canā€™t participate in the combine testing due to a quad injury - these results could be the deciding factor as to who we go with.

Interesting, Boot.
Brodie is a fine footballer and he would give our midfield more teeth almost straight away which I like. Moreso than the others I feel.
His work at stoppages is the best of any in this draft and he has the ability to weave through traffic at the contest and get out into the clear to either feed others or take the kick himself.

If we keep the pick 1 my order of preference is McCluggage, Brodie, SPS, McGrath.

Ainsworth who I would ā– ā– ā– ā– ā– ā–  love, I agree he would only come into the frame if we split the pick for two top 10ā€™ers. Same with Taranto, who you can only be impressed with.

OK , one school of thought is pick the best player available, but theres no ā€œstandoutā€ so in the light of the weaknesses of the team over the last 3 years and given the defence talent we have on the list, the best goal kicking mid is the way to go. Clugg.

I reckon Dodoro and Keane have seen enough of McCluggage performing this year, that a quad injury is just a mere blimp in the choiceā€¦ Patton/Boyd/Paddy McCartin I think skipped a whole draft combine and still went 1st IIRC.

Yep, good call. You could probably argue that itā€™s a much more even draft at the top end this year though, so things like draft combine testing may be slightly more relevant this time around.

5 and 7 still needs to happen if available IMO. Brodie and Taranto would set us up for success for a long time.
