In memoriam. Australian Journalism. Judd Wept

Yep. What choppsuey said.

Incorrect. Still have to get permission to share in a commercial media outlet.

May as well argue that a movie being put out at the cinema makes it public property.

If she hasn’t copyrighted the content, it’s fair game.

As distinct from every movie you’ve ever seen which is copyrighted.

Really??
So for instance every single tweet that’s published in an article must have been approved by the original tweeter in order to be published?

Maybe its a preemptive strike. (He has some dirt on them)

He didnt seem like a bad bloke mitch, think hes been dealt unfairly given the circumstances.

When I read the headline, of the story I was hoping it was Barrett, lol

Copyright and social media

When a brand or individual posts original content on social media, the creator retains ownership. However, licensing terms for most popular social media allow the sites to publish user-generated content. For example, Facebook’s statement of rights specifies that while the user owns all content posted to the site, “[F]or content that is covered by intellectual property rights… you specifically give us… a non-exclusive, transferrable sub-licensable, royalty-free, worldwide license to use any IP content that you post.”

Original content, such as writing, photos and music, is protected by copyright; without obtaining permission from the owner, using the material outside of the social media space infringes copyright. Sharing music, photos and other material copyrighted by others without their permission is therefore unauthorised. It is important to keep in mind that allowing access to unauthorised materials, such as through a link, infringes copyright law; the page that is sharing or facilitating the sharing of this material is likely to be liable, not the person who shared it to the page.

Absolutely he has been treated unfairly and I’d be looking at unfair dismissal if I were him. He’d probably get railroaded out of the footy media entirely for taking that approach but I hope he stands up for himself.

They are typically posted as links to the original content

well there you go.

He wasnt dismissed was he? just stood down temporarily? with no further details how long it would be.
I imagine he would be chatting to the union though.

Yeah ok stood down, but I’d be seeking assurances that the grounds on which he’s been stood down is solid or not.

The AFL doesn’t recognise them as journalists. Start from that point and it’s easy to label this as outside typical corporate guidelines (but it seems extremely arbitrary to say this was the bad post amongst various others disparaging to the AFL/clubs/individuals).

I imagine not being recognised as a journalist takes it from sharing material without permission in a news article to posting copyrighted material on a corporate website.

Which is, like, worse.

Corporate website? Which corporate website?

AFL.com.au

… Except he didn’t

He just tweeted it.

Ah okay then

Does that then render your copyright thing irrelevant?

Or does he still need permission to tweet it?

Would depend on his employment contract I guess. Probably a clause in there about his Twitter account being an official AFL communication channel or something like that.

Well beyond the scope of my knowledge.

there inlies the issue with your arguments, you’re entertaining integrity in relation to the afl, let alone the media.

this will be about nothing but the fact he reported about something damaging to the afl. As others have said across the whole site, the afl is hanging on by a thread and it’s only by the good graces of 3 state govt.s co op that it’s still going.
but they don’t get a free reign to do whatever they want.
and reporting on that, when you’re an accredited afl communication specialist like everyone in the afl media is, you should not be pointing out things that can, going by eddies numbers, put at risk the afl of losing 250 mil if the season is canned due to these breaches.

look at cane cornes as an example, does he look like one that apologies for having a strong opinion on everything ?
funny how the only apology i’ve seen him do, is about umpires having a bias about toby greene, funny that hey.
