Essendon defender Courtney Dempsey has undergone scans to determine the extent of a hamstring strain suffered in Saturday‘s VFL practice match against Richmond at the True Value Solar Centre.
Dempsey left the field late in the final quarter in just his second game since returning from an off-season calf injury.
“Courtenay can‘t take a trick after getting over his calf injury he just got a slight grab in his hamstring,†Club doctor Bruce Reid said.
“The physiotherapists at the VFL thought he might have strained his lower hamstring so he is having a scan this afternoon.â€
Big man Patrick Ryder is still a chance to take on Carlton on Sunday night after scans revealed no major damage to his ankle.
Ryder will now aim to return to training later in the week to prove his fitness ahead of the clash with the Blues.
“He rolled his ankle and had a lot of trouble weight bearing after the game but he is now walking around pretty well,â€
“His scan from the weekend shows no major structural damage and no internal damage.â€
“We hope we can get him up for Sunday but at this stage it is going to be close and with a nine day break we will decide later in the week.â€
In a further boost for the Bombers Nick Kommer continues to make strong progress from a patella tendon injury and is expected to return to full training in the next fortnight.
“Nick is doing really well now, he is had some quiet severe patella tendinitis and he is now really at the stage where he is progressing well,†Reid said.
“We would expect him back with the main group in the next few weeks.â€
Jason Winderlich played three quarters in Saturday‘s VFL practice match and will now be in line for a return to the senior team along side Jake Melksham who has served his two-match suspension.

On the bright side, Gleeson lives to bury Carlton
On the bright side, Ryder in every way.

Not sure why you're worrying. Neither are Premiership Playersâ„¢, no one will know they're missing.
So going by that, Ryder will miss the next 6 weeks?
Gotta look at the positives. On the bright side, Gleeson lives to bury Carlton
Positives - Winderlich most likely in this week for Zerret, only change.
As Ryder should come up.
Sounds good to me.
Edit...forgot melksham
Also Dempsey injuring his hammy means Gleeson will stay in senior side longer. that's a small bonus. Hopefully Dempsey will be back for Anzac Day.

Dempsey wont be back for anzac day. Im thinking r7 or 8 at the earliest.
Id be suprised to see dempsey before the break, he’s cooked. Bomber said “he’ll be a while” last week so add a month onto however long that is
Dempsey is cooked till mid year boys.
this blows :(
Every silver lining has a cloud.
UNLEASH THE GLEISH
gutted for dempsey. Good news is that he will be fresh for the second half of the year when we usually fade out...
Dempsey is very important and we need him right for the end of season. I’m happy to give opportunity to Dalgleish, Edwards etc until he is ready.
Bad luck for Dempsey, he would be the glazing on the cherry on the icing on the cake, if only we could get him fit and on the park. The good news out of all this is, we can now afford to give him plenty of time to get over the injury without the team balance being greatly affected. He is a class act, brittle, but classy, as is Winders. Having both fit and available would be a bonus, but l am not holding my breath waiting for it to happen. Good news about Ryder.
Strange Edwards hasn't been mentioned and we haven't even given him a game yet.
oh bother
Paddy thinks he will be right, made an utterly hilarious joke about it that i wont repeat here that would no doubt cause 57 headlines.
Melks back this week will be good.
