Jake Melksham

One thing that frustrated me with Melksham last week and against Richmond was that he gives off the 1m handpass but doesn't then attempt to lay the shephard and help out the player he gave the ball too so it becomes a 1m handball to a player who has to quickly handpass it on under pressure.

this is one area Sydney excel, give the handball then apply a shepherd. It not just for a one metre handball either the give off then charge at the closest opposition even if its 10m away.

We need a bit more of this. Ambrose & Chappy do it, the rest need to follow. I haven't noticed Melky in this regard I will keep an eye out.

Not a smart footballer and doesn't have a football brain, panicks under pressure and turns it over, doesn't get it nearly enough and I can't remember a player with as little influence on as many games as jakey. Dunno how many games his played but say 80, I reckon he would of had an actual impact on 10 of those 80 at best.

89 games with 47 goals (9 this year for 5 goals)

You are underselling him. He's a more than handy football. Sure, he can be a bit scrappy with his disposal, and could win more of the ball, but he takes the game on and puts his nose over the ball. We need players who do that. When it doesn't come off, it can look pretty bad, but when it does, he can get us going. You've got to take the good with the bad with Jake. I think he will thrive given more oportunity in Watson's absence.

Yeh not great, got average disposal stats there? Apart from playing forward a bit this year he has been pretty much a fully fledged mid since coming to the club, should be averaging 20 per game at a minimum.

Jake is a solid rotation midfielder. Ideally he should have the odd BOG though. I thought he did last year.

I agree he should rack up 20 minimum.

His strength is his work in tight and his physicality.

When his confidence is up, his outside game seems to lift - sometimes he can launch a drop punt 60 metres.

Its sort of a contradiction but  his outside confidence seems to rise when he plays more inside.

He is going to need to play as an inside mid in the next few months, so hopefully we get to see the full package similar to what he was producing late last year.

rubbish, he has been used all over the place (fwd flank, bank flank, tagger) and as a 2nd or 3rd tier mid rotation. His best games are clearly when he is in the no.1 rotation and that simply hasn't happened too often and he rarely starts in the square. FWIW worth if you take the first game against richmond last year where he played as sub out of the equation he averaged 20.2 touches in 2013.

no doubt he needs to increase his output this year, we'll know a hell of a lot more in 3 months about his worth to the side i suspect (for better or worse).

i thought his first quarter on Saturday was actually pretty good. He had a good contested ball win and hand ball to jobe on the back flank which set up and good 50 entry. he had a nice clearance to howlett for a goal and he had 2 attempts on goal where he was caught in two minds and didn't execute well.

he is a confidence player and his confidence isn't there hence his decision making is slow and he is getting caught with it and coughing it up a bit. There was a bit of play last week where we were streaming through the centre and he provided some good run to receive from carlisle, he had bags on for the easy give running uncontested through the square but instead he propped and went back to carlisle, as it turned out myers then drilled Tbell with a 60 meter bullet for a goal anyway but the passage of play underlined to me the jake's just a little off. it is almost as if he is caught in the mindset of retaining possession by going backwards and sideways and minimising risks (like the whole side has been at times).

jake will come good when he starts taking the game on and playing direct by default.

can someone post a gif of that goal he kicked against norf last year where he marked on 50 turned and played on on to his left and drilled it. that is what he is capable of but like the rest of the side he has been reluctant to turn and go.

His season turned around last year on  the back of the first WC game where it was very pronounced after half time that side had been told to play on at all costs, melk in particular stood out to me that  night as taking on that mantra and he didn't look back for the rest of the year.

someone should write 'turn and go' on his hand on sunday.

he hasn't had much time in the centre this year and i'd like to see him setting up behind the circle in jobe's usual starting position. I reckon we saw paddy tap to the front of the circle for hepp who then linked with jobe running from the back of the circle at least 4 times on Saturday for very good deep clearance. jake is quicker and a more penetrating kick than jobe and i think he could be really damaging from their.

Its simple for Jake - Needs to get value for his possessions - This happened in 2013 - This needs to be his benchmark.

While I agree Jake needs some persistence I wish Colyer was given the same latitude. Same issues.

Release Heater and have Melksham tag for a while. Otherwise it’s only fair to bring current output into question given nobody could argue the opportunity and run of games provided into question.

Just needs to unleash and belt some ■■■■

When he's switched on, he's pretty good and tends to do all those things. When he's not switched on, he drifts along a bit. Kinda like Paddy up until he matured the last few years.

Very much agree with the playing on. When he’s up and flying he makes us a much quicker side (in terms of ball movement) as he uses every option (kick long, run the ball into space, take on a man to free up the dish off etc), keeps his eyes up and plays with a lot of daring.

As Gough said "lt's time."

Meh.

I'll expect A grade football from him when he gets A grade opportunity.

You are right he has had very little opportunity to prove himself...not!

Jake Melksham... the new Zaharakis (who was the new Stanton)

Who was the new Lucas, who was the new Wallis, who was...
David Calthorpe.
Who is the new Barry Young then?

Meh.

Hold on, he has had plenty of opportunities. He was very good in the second half of last year, hopefully he can find that sort of form.

I noticed that too

I'm sure he will.

It's just his turn now.
