James Hird Resigns

What the hell is with this Tania and Hird rumour not going away. I was sure it was BS but it wont die.

What rumour?

Apparant split.

I think the word you’re looking for is “Alleged”.

First post since Jims resignation, the club will not be getting money from me for our (my sons and I) memberships in 2016. Ill support the club and my team but my 1year boycott is my protest against Jims removal, might be insignificant in the grand scheme but the club needs to know this is not what i continued to sign on for

I’ve been sad and angry all week. I do feel like the members have been betrayed. I’ve spoken to a number of people, including some at the club, I’ve crystallised my thoughts as briefly as I could. (not very…) Well here goes:

  • The EFC board is responsible for the structure that lead to Dank being unchecked in his role.
  • The EFC Chairman of the day put his personal, outside allegiances ahead of the club and its people and ultimately the members.
  • Governance was the issue from day 1, not James Hird.
  • The CEO and Chairman of the day righty are no longer there.
  • These were not the scapegoats the AFL wanted, but the board of the day did not stand firm enough to prevent ongoing AFL sponsored harassment.
  • Despite this, a ground swell of support for the players and the coach has brought about a record membership. An amazing outcome and one that only Essendon supporters could have delivered.
  • I’d argue that membership by significant majority backed Hird’s belief of innocence of players and therefore coach.
  • Somehow the Board has concluded (as per media conference on Tuesday) that as long as Hird was around, there would be no clear air for Essendon.
  • That to me seems contrary to what I believe to be the view of most members who, by their becoming members, show their support for the whole club including the coach. (I actually think the membership number shows a large amount of support directly for Hird.)
  • There are always people who choose expedience over outcome if you end up on the wrong side of an equasion with such ones, you’re in trouble.
  • The EFC board clearly has at least 1 too many of those types of people.
  • Over the last 4 weeks, the CEO and Chairman have been negotiating/discussing with Hird whether or not there would ever be clear air over the club while he stays.
  • Both are of the opinion that Hird needed to go for the chance of free space to appear. (expedience in my view)
  • They eventually got Hird to agree.
  • The Boards remainder then acquiesced and accepted his retendered resignation. One that had been on the table for some time which they evidently rejected until Monday.

Questions:
Why change now?
If it’s because of game results, how short sighted! Surely these recent poor results in games were inevitable. As soon as WADA announced its appeal, I thought we’d loose every game for the rest of the year. We ask these men to risk themselves week in week out, which is hard enough without the spectre of WADA over them. The resilience to on field challenges so evident for 2 years was extinguished by the WADA appeal. Their current form is not a reflection of coaching or game plan, its a reflection of their mindset in a situation they have completely no bearing over. Let alone the injuries we’ve endured and the toughest early season draw ever, compounded by no preseason. We were never, ever going to se out the year in good form.

Sacking the Coach is pointless as regards immediate performance. Modern football departments are a team act, not one individual delivers the coaching performance, so booting the figure head achieves what in coaching terms? Will there be a new magical game plan tomorrow? If we win tomorrow, does that justify Hird’s game plan? Because it’s the one we’ll run!

From day 1 of this saga, the EFC Boards lack of clear, visible action has contributed significantly to the pressure on the senior coach. Naturally that has to affect his performance, so it may well be that this is a good decision for Hird, his family and therefore the club. If that is the case now, its one that could have been avoided with a board able to publically present itself. One that effectively supported its members and their senior coach.
When have they ever publically, completely backed him during the last 3 years? He’s been isolated at every turn.

Hird said Tuesday he still wanted to coach the team, he believes he’s a good coach and that he doesn’t want to go. Why would we not just honour his contract, give him one clear shot at a team in ‘clear space’? Our current course of action, alternatively is:
Pay another coach, not to.
Start a process to find a new one.
Begin everything from scratch.
The chances of us looking any better than we do right now, this time next year are surely diminished by the above?
(Who stumps up for the contract payout by the way? the very members who’ve been ignored?)

It’s my opinion that the EFC board, other than the original Chairman, has avoided, even shirked its responsibility for the saga’s existence in the first place (those directors that were there in 2011 I call out.) and that the new directors have failed to improve the boards ability to communicate a clear strong position on anything or have the board accept its responsibility. They’ve left all the heavy lifting to Hird and Watson, they’re even still hiding behind quotes from James Hird urging us to support the club. The board as a whole has run for the hills.

Now I need to qualify that at least 2 board members have indeed been directly talking to members and supporters, for which they should be held in esteem. Agree with them or not. The CEO has also been very available to discuss these topics. My opinion is that this does not excuse the EFC board as a whole, from its responsibility to represent the members and ensure that the club upholds the values that we all subscribed and voted them in to uphold.

I want the board, at the very least, any remaining 2011 members, to go. Then there can be ‘clean air’ to move forward from. I’d prefer Hird to still be coach, but concede that’s a remote possibility.

This last week has been the darkest of all in my 35+ years of living memories as a supporter and member.
I fundamentally believe the club has got this very wrong. The boards messages are contradictory, on the one hand, we’re all innocent, on the other, while Hird is here, there can be no peace.

I’m concerned that this will result in significant a membership fall. I’m worried this opens up the club to other political agendas. I’ve seen not one example of good leadership from EFC other than the outstanding one demonstrated by the outgoing coach. I hope the club can find some light quickly to avoid what looks like being a lengthy dark spell.

I do love the EFC and will continue to support the team/club. But the board must go.

I would find that very very hard to believe.

If WADA lose their appeal, and I feel sure they will, it's going to take all my strength to hold back from storming their farkin HQ and razing the stinkin joint! So help me they have ■■■■■■ up the lives of so many people...

I will be right behind you!

It’s true.
I was only interested in Essendon over the last three years because everyone loved us and it was so easy to be an Essendon supporter.

i understand that my question to you the other night got lost in all the other post’s.

So will ask again,

What are we moving forward to?

Another phase in Essendon’s history - isnt that what every wants?

Thanks for responding.

Yes we all want another phase, a good phase, but til WADA and CAS is over, we cannot start another phase.

You are absolutely right, however hopefully be the time preseason rolls around the CAS hearing will be done, we will have a brand new club with nothing hanging over their heads.

That’s a fresh start right there

Except Sunshine, the reaming of our favorite Son and still a gray away strip !

No, I am calling the people who drop on and drop off as fair weather - thats the ■■■■■■■ definition of a fair weather supporter.

Do you actually know what a fair weather supporter is? We have plenty at Essendon, and they are members too.

Jesus, dont take everything so personally. Relax and think before posting

Maybe you’re the one who should be thinking before posting. I have followed Essendon for over 50 years, most of them as a member. Many on here are in the same boat. The last 3 years of this bullshit have gutted me. I have had heated discussions and arguments with friends, family and total strangers. I’ve read everything there is to read on this saga. I’ve educated myself as much as I can. I’ve had sleepless nights, I’ve been emotional. I’ve hurt with the players, coaches & fellow supporters. I’ve watched people I admire have their reputations dragged through the mud and their welfare ignored. I still don’t know why. I’ve stuck with the club - until now.

In all honesty I don’t know whether I will renew my membership next year after this club I’ve loved all my life has behaved with such a decided lack of morality. I could never, until now, foresee any circumstance where I would feel so alienated from it. At the moment the players are the only thing I am interested in. I’m totally disillusioned with my club, the AFL, ASADA, the media. If that constitutes a fair weather supporter then I’ll take that on board.

Have a think about the people who became disillusioned with the club when they discovered the footy department leaders allowed someone like Dank to stroll around unfettered.

Wow. I really don’t know where to start. I really don’t.

Go back to 2011.

Anyone else get the feeling there's a few club/board plants going hard in here since Hirdy got the shaft?

Obvious as dogs balls on a cat.

‘Hang on, we need to make it sound like our stupid everyday member. That’s not stupid enough. Say something about Dank.’

I love how the Asaga thread has turned every spanner that can barley spell their own names into a detective. Fantastic.

Lol. Love it.

Sorry “Your Team” couldn’t resist and jesting, lol.

I’d like to be in the room to see the jaws drop at AFL house when they hear Hirdy just signed up for the level 4 Coaching accreditation.

Priceless.
