James Hird Resigns

No, I am calling the people who drop on and drop off as fair weather - thats the ■■■■■■■ definition of a fair weather supporter.

Do you actually know what a fair weather supporter is? We have plenty at Essendon, and they are members too.

Jesus, dont take everything so personally. Relax and think before posting

Maybe you’re the one who should be thinking before posting. I have followed Essendon for over 50 years, most of them as a member. Many on here are in the same boat. The last 3 years of this bullshit have gutted me. I have had heated discussions and arguments with friends, family and total strangers. I’ve read everything there is to read on this saga. I’ve educated myself as much as I can. I’ve had sleepless nights, I’ve been emotional. I’ve hurt with the players, coaches & fellow supporters. I’ve watched people I admire have their reputations dragged through the mud and their welfare ignored. I still don’t know why. I’ve stuck with the club - until now.

In all honesty I don’t know whether I will renew my membership next year after this club I’ve loved all my life has behaved with such a decided lack of morality. I could never, until now, foresee any circumstance where I would feel so alienated from it. At the moment the players are the only thing I am interested in. I’m totally disillusioned with my club, the AFL, ASADA, the media. If that constitutes a fair weather supporter then I’ll take that on board.

John carpenter in the sun ,yesterday and today 7 letters pro hird .yet in the last 3 years till he was sacked none.a bit like Nicholls and pannell when they, umpire our games.when the game is over we get a free kick.

Did this get run through google translate or something?

Where does the board stand ? - I believe you need a backbone to be able to do that…

I just want us to win again. I want to be excited like i was last year when i booked flights for the elim final. I want us to reach 70k members and fk me i want a win on anzac day more than anything.

This is the fresh start we needed whether you like it or not. If players want to leave then let them. It’ll be our turn again. We have a good spine in blokes like hurley and hooker who are essendon people, you can just tell. and good young mids in hep, z merrett, laverde.

If we fix up the off field ■■■■ im confident we can turn it around on field reasonably quick. The base is there for a great side

Think you are fooling yourself about the basis for a great side. No ruckman, few with any speed and our best players are all over 28; Watson, Goddard and Stanton. Hooker and Hurley are good solid players, JoeDan may be a star one day, Heppell is good but not elite. Falls away from there and so many clubs are ahead of us. EFC cannot fix the off-field stuff as they have to rely on the SAGA to end. Not much wrong with anything else, it is the on field stuff that has been the big drama.

You may want to talk our players under to satisfy your morbid approach th this club (sort of like the media but sadder because you claim to be one of us) but that does not make you right. Putting Heppell down, failing to mention Zerrett, Colyer and others is silly.

Get a grip.

Fix the off-field, get a good coach and watch 2016 turn quickly and suddenly we are a “top four contender” coming out of mouths such as yours.

We had a good coach. Notice not one article in the papers?
Corrupt bastards

nah i’d rather be as reactionary as you.

I struggle to believe that anyone could believe on-field performances were a factor.

I don’t disagree with the majority of your post, but this statement is strange. There were many factors at play and of course, our lousy on-field performance is one of them.

Do you really think if we were sitting pretty in the top 4 at the moment that Hird would still be gone? Of course he wouldn’t, he would be preparing for the finals campaign and the administration would be in love with him.

Clubs care about public perception and their relationship with City Hall, but they care about wins and losses most of all. A good win-loss record heals almost all wounds.

I meant the thrashings. Obviously, if we were sitting in the eight none of this would have happened … for now. But I think most supporters recognise the extraordinary circumstances have worn down some of our players. You only need a few weak links for a chain to break. (Add in injuries to key players).

I have sat through our three canings (right to the end). So have many others. I haven’t detected any disgust or anger. Just a resignation and hope that next year would be different … under James Hird

One thing that the Board hasn't been communicating (like many things), is where the list stands. Are we striving for a premiership next year? are we rebuilding? Are we rebuilding, without saying 'rebuilding'? Are we moving half the list on, or trying to keep the list together?

They also have not made comment if they believe the results have been driven by a poor list, or poor coaching, or the stress of the saga.

I’m kind of sick of playing guessing games and Want to be told what’s happening without some wish-wash answer.

Until there is a coach on board you won’t (and shouldn’t) hear from the board on those issues. That is not their job to decide, it is up to the new coach, and new coaching panel, and how they see it, the board then backs this plan, whatever it turns out to be.

Surely it’s the job of the list manager, Head of the football department & the CEO to be across this, not a new coach.

The list manager hands the list to the head coach, and the coach does his job. Many clubs have gone into trade week with our coaches and have been active. The days of head coaches, having major says of the list are over.

But saying all that, surely in making a decision on the resigning/sacking of a head coach… The board has conversations with the CEO who is across all of this.

No hope on those 70k members. I think the club will be glad if they get to 50k.

As far as a fresh start. It isn’t. It’s just a start. It won’t be fresh unless we get better coaches, better recruiters and better developers of talent.

I think it’ll have to be a five year slow build.

You’ll get 60K easily next year

Most of the fair-weathers will sign back up a few games into the season when we’ve won a few matches and the press are talking positive

The membership rippers wont actually rip anything but will be the first to sign back up once they’ve abused the poor girl on the phone about whats happened to Jim thinking that somehow its her fault and she cares

The rest of us who support the club will sign up as normal, hoping that 2016 will be the year we see our team play awesome footy

You’re right, we wont get 70K, but we wont get any less than the figure we have for this year either (you’ll get more)

The membership ‘drop off’ will be about as real as the player exodus - sure, a few will refuse to sign back up, but there are many more waiting to take their place

so you’re calling people that leave now fair weather, but the droves and droves of those that’d stand up next year aren’t? ■■■■ off. Anyone thats been a member that last 3 years is the furthest thing from a fair weather supporter.

No hope on those 70k members. I think the club will be glad if they get to 50k.

I’ll take that bet

Well Said Rana

To Bacchus Fox and Albert Yeo.
I don’t put this saga in the same category as previous EFC controversies and bust-ups. They were internal affairs dealt with in-house and independently.

This has been driven and marketed by an AFL that, like all bullies, crave control. We have been treated like a fast-food franchise holder - what to wear (clash Guernsey), how to advertise (website) etc.

I don’t believe there was any malice aforethought. I can understand Demetriou’s actions when the ACC and Asada came a-knockin’ and I can understand why our club self reported (although I wouldn’t have). But there must have been a point when the AFL knew it was appropriate and prudent to pause and reflect on the most appropriate, principled course of action. But like bullies - is megalomaniacs too melodramatic? - they chose to plough ahead using their media lackeys to create public opinion. As soon as we were thrown out of the finals and hit with penalties it was war. It had to be war. We had to be guilty. (The deal offered to the players really epitomises this.)

James Hird refused to trim his integrity to outside demands. To me, his survival as coach was a test of our club’s independence. I believe the members’ wish for him to stay delayed what I now view as the inevitable, probably to the detriment of everyone concerned … aside from the media and our AFL proxies. I struggle to believe that anyone could believe on-field performances were a factor.

Key image of the year for me? Little sitting with McLaughlin at one of our games.
