The idea of thousands turning up to a Saturday morning training session with hundreds of bring back Hird signs makes me laugh, don’t underestimate the power of the nuffie!
I may or may not have worn my old James Hird badge into the office today – mostly to wind up the Carlton supporters, who have been particularly lippy in their criticism of both the great man and the club over the past week.
The 3 main AFL media mouthpieces are purple flog, whateley and the female fossil.
Purple’s take is Essendon should just appoint Hird with no process but Hird will always be remembered as a failed drug cheating coach.
Whateley says this is entirely up to Essendon and they should do what they want. Why is there even a statement that we can appoint any coach we choose? They didn’t say this re carlton or tassie. Seems to imply this hasn’t always been the case with Essendon.
Then he goes onto say we are scaring away better credentialed options and our process can’t proceed until we answer the James Hird question. His answer is to exclude James from the start to gain access to all these better qualified coaches like a normal club would do.
The spiteful one just spews her normal anti-Hird vitriol. The AFL know they can always rely on her for that.
This looks like coordinated AFL anti-Hird propaganda to me. Partially disguised as pseudo support, but still 100% anti-Hird.
If people are too scared to apply, then they don’t really want the job or back themselves to win it.
Or maybe just making up excuses as they don’t want the job.
If Hird went for the Carlton job, any candidate would back themselves in to present well enough to win the job.
And I’m sure Hird would have reservations about whether he’d get it or not if he was applying at Carlton.
But that won’t be tested. Hird has made it clear he’s not going for any other jobs. Only the ones he’s comfortable with.
It’ll be interesting to see which coaches go for the Carlton job but don’t go for the Essendon one.
You can look at it however you like. Those that didn’t apply, don’t want it. Ot those that didn’t apply showed good judgement and preferred to go anywhere else but the place that has failed for 20 years chasing the next messiah that they believe is the guy who will lead them out of their dross. There’s probably another 50 other ways to view it.
Interesting on the recent podcast, matty knights said that for the first 2 year, peter jackson dealt with the coteries/factiomns etc, was his protection and he could focus on footy, once PJ left, The rumbles got louder and Knights was replaced.
Hird already had his run after using the club to knife Matty Knights (who really shoulda been dimma then that would’ve never been allowed to happen)
It’s another reason now why I’m not so sure. This whole Hird gets Essendon stuff is a bit of BS - Hird is the problem.
Did Hardwick and his support white ant an existing coach to get a run at the job? Nah he went through a process.
Hird supporters don’t like that.
Just like he doesn’t submit himself to working as an assistant in another non Essendon environment.(gws basically sitting alongside an interim McVeigh doesn’t count)
■■■■ I hate factions and politics at our club. If it was me hiring I would make the criteria clear.
you must be working as an assistant at a current AFL club.
Maybe the only other exception is a recent senior coach/current senior coach from another club.
Hird if he was really keen on the Essendon job would have been doing a Nathan Buckley.
