James Hird — Sept 25 onwards

Jesse from The Sash podcast has been advertising it. Although I’m not entirely sure if it is a pisstake or not.

Don’t think we need to be campaigning at a captains run anyway.

Yeah I can’t see why our players need even more distractions than they already have, being apart of a club that is failing and on the verge of falling apart completely

You are correct. The percentages are low. Probably the same as throwing a dart blind folded and hitting bullseye.
What are the percentages for hiring someone who hasn’t coached or been an assistant coach for 10 years?
I’m not sure there’s been any.
The closest I can think of are Kevin Sheedy (Essendon to GWS in 6 years?), Leigh Matthews (Collingwood to Brisbane in 7 years?), Jesalenko (Saints to Carlton in late 80s), John Kennedy (Hawks to North in 8 years?) and Ron Barassi (Melbourne to Sydney in 7 years?).
Leigh won a premiership with a team that couldn’t take that next step. Jesalenko took on a good team, but couldn’t get them to where they wanted to get to. The rest were more last gasp culture appointments that helped the next coach more than anything else.

It’s fair to say we aren’t where Brisbane were in 2000 nor where Carlton were in the late 80s. So as long as we’re happy to appoint Hird, to pass it over to someone else to succeed, then it can work out well.

I’m not sure we’d be accepting of that though. We are that damaged as fans/supporters that we might actually prefer to stick with the possibility of a ‘Hird redemption story’ than another path that can lead to a club premiership. Obviously, if everything goes right (which our last years shows we’re bound to get it right somewhere eventually), then both can occur concurrently.

No, which is a very good point.

How dare you even use the word sensible in anything about me !

Well Bluey, you can be humble and subservient, never worked for me

I really don’t think there’ll be a pro-Hird “rally” at the Hangar on Saturday. At most, there might be a few people with homemade signs.

It was arrogance.

Okay. It’s your right as a citizen to be as ignorant of English vocabulary as you wish.

Maybe it was prejudice.

It was a laser focus on the prize and 100% buy in.

The opposite to the scratch matches that we appear to be playing in these days.

no it wasn’t . they hadn’t achieved anything to be proud of.
commitment delivered 2000, along with more talent than the opposition.

Interesting Malthouse said in that article coaches are always better second time around and yet recent history shows premierships going to new coaches.

Reminds me of all the old players who say l’m a better player now. I know where to run to, l don’t have to run as much. I remember Misiti saying it in the early 2000’s.

But they are never as good, and not enough value is given to that inherent desire that exists in both young players and coaches that determines success. They may not do everything right but that desire overcomes that lack of experience.

Sounds desperate and cringe

well you should be working in AFL, Dingus. Never give up! Dreams can come true.

Just thinking, Bartel and McCartney coming to the club is very appealing I rate them both. But if pops Kelly got the gig they might still come anyway right?

Do you think Whateley is the godfather. What he or other media pundits is irrelevant to the board’s decision for the next coach. Sometimes you give these media pundits too much power.

Hird not coaching footballers directly for 11 years(unless you count his sons football team as a kid ) at the highest level.

Hird’s involvement in the drug scandal.

Hird’s attempt at his own life after he last coached our club.

Thats the three reasons he probably shouldn’t accept his application imho.

For the interests of both club and person.

Im not sure what profession that if it drove you to attempte suicide you would encourage someone to reapply.

Jimmy Hird looks fantastic now. And as Solly said in his presser - happy for him. But geez coaching an afl club has to be stressful, even moreso our club.

Relaxing and acting as head of coaching Port Melbourne is a world away from the Essendon coaches box.

I define arrogance a little differently.
Arrogance is where ambition exceeds ability.

I agree that pride is what we need, not arrogance.

So I take it you don’t want Hird. But tell us the real reasons.
