Latest Scams, Viruses, Malware and other nasties

I had that one. He was pretty convincing but I was suspicious when he said he could double my internet speed without altering the line that comes in. Then I got a pop up asking for access to control my computer. I told him he wasn’t getting that and he hung up.

I actually got another call from the same guy about a week later and said to him that if he thought I was going to give him access to my computer he could think again, and he hung up again.

I’ve got Equifax keeping an eye on my credit. My last job was with Veda, now owned by Equifax.

And I don’t give my landline to anybody, so anyone using it has got it without consent, or by breaching Do Not Call.

Calls are essentially free now, so I think they call numbers at random. The only calls I get on my personal phone are from the 4 people I have given the number to; or from people who can’t believe they dialled the wrong number; or spam calls.

Neighbour just got credit card scammed on computer ( did not go through I phone) a Bendigo Bank email requiring re-registration within a short time frame. Bank said there have been a lot, traced to France.
I got an email from ehealth requiring registration by 30 August . I suspect this is another scam purporting to offer continuation of Telehealth. All you have to do is check with your GP.
Anything requiring action by a specified date is probably suss.

Dubai have struck a blow with the arrest of HushPuppi.

The description of the HushPuppi BEC scam method reminds me of the one I detected a while back.

A customer of ours in China wanted to order some equipment ( around $20,000. ) he had his email account hacked and the hacker attempted to change the bank account number so he could direct the funds elsewhere.

It became very obvious there was another entity in the email loop trying to change things up.

Although this was not a particularly high end scam in our case, its easy to see how these people can rapidly accumulate large sums of money.

Got a new one today

From “NBNCo” telling me they were going to disconnect my account because of “suspect activity on your IP address”. Was a robo-call so couldn’t have any fun with them unfortunately.

I guess I’ll hear from my actual internet service provider if anything comes of it.

I had a voicemail from an 02 number yesterday.

Seemed to be all in Chinese though, so I’m not sure if they’re coming after me or not.

Had the same call, said they are going to disconnect my internet.

I said that’s fine, I can log into bombebrlitz on 4g.

Might have confused them.

I got a robocall on my mobile yesterday “from” the [pause] investigation division [pause] at the [pause] Department of [pause] Home Affairs. Apparently there’s an arrest warrant out on me, I need to press one NOW…

So i moved recently and a somebody nicked my mail from my old apartment. It had a new licence in it and they’ve been playing funny buggers ever since. Taken out a few thousand in “Nimble” loans and have opened Telstra services in my name. I’ve had debt collection agencies hounding me. Anyway today i called Telstra and clearly got the work experience girl and she gave me the address of where the service is being used and still active. Whoops.

I had a chinese voicemail call yesterday too. It was from a mobile number though not a 02 number, so l googled it and it was listed for denwam.com.

There’s a facebook page for denwan electronics selling a counterfeit detector, that ships around Nairobi, so l have no idea if the nigerians are speaking chinese or what was happening on that call.

Only Nairobi is in Kenya, east Africa, not Nigeria, in western Africa.

get that 5 times a day.

ooooo look at me i’m so popular

So are you saying there are no Nigerians in Kenya Mr Geography

If you’re bored and you get one of “those” telephone calls, pretend to be interested, give them nothing but keep them on the line, ask them questions like you care about what they’re saying and then give them false everything.

I had fun with the bloke who was from “Windows” who told me I had a virus on the computer. He asked if I was logged in and my computer turned on. I suggested that he would already know this because he was from Windows and already aware of the state of my computer. That’s where he went hurr durr, I don’t know what you mean.

Ha ha It’s outconning the con artists. I don’t want them to pester me again so the first thing I say is that this is not my phone number, I’m at a friends place, he had to go out and he’s expecting a parcel so he asked me to stay. I even told one crook I had recently had a massive win at the casino and was keen to invest my winnings in something. I could practically hear the moron salivating! Kept him on the phone for ages, then gave him phoney everything! ROFLMAO
