I wouldnt be overly enthused about mcgrath as VC again.
I’d probably prefer Merrett captain and then Langford, McGrath and Redman on level pecking order (either all as vice captains or just with the leadership group title.)
Ridley is the only other one I see a likely candidate, with Wright, Parish and Laverde smokies but unlikely and hopefully not for mine. Has Gresham ever been in a leadership group? Seems to be doing everything right so who knows.
I wouldn’t VC McGrath until he has a consistent high level season.
Human cliche machine
Some of his efforts last year on field were downright embarrassing. Multiple times he avoided physical contact and put in half arsed defensive efforts, its frustrating because generally he’s very sound defensively
He seems the ultimate professional, but i think his game would benefit from him NOT being vc and just focusing on his own game and getting better
He’s Heppell mkii, probably worse.
Certain players have a “future leader of the club” tag on them when they first walk in the door.
They might have been school captain for instance.
As that born leader quality seems to be innate, its unlikely they lose that aura, even though they may not be the best player in the team.
Inexplicably, some players become club captain after a quite inauspicious career. Eg Ben Stratton at Hawthorn; sort off like a Bradbury are the next in line when other options retire, leave or are injured.

He cops is the most around here (even in Feb, and in multiple threads) but if every player trained & prepared as well as Heppell has done throughout his entire career, and were as committed to the EFC as he has been, we wouldn’t be still hanging out for our next finals win.
A better answer would have been:
‘Ask me the question when I’m retired and if I haven’t won a flag at that time. While I’m still playing the dream is still alive and the desire is still there.’
I know it’s easy for us to be wise in hindsight but surely Dyson could anticipate the question and have a better response prepared.
