List build - where are we going in the next 70,000 posts? (Part 3)

We need to drop the axe on senior players.

It’s imperative.

it’s a bit crazy a list with the following guys and we needed steinberg in defence.

Fletcher (finger injury)
Hooker played
Hurley played
Carlisle (hamstring injury)
Pears (Heel spur injury)
Ambrose
Ryder - ruck
Hardingham

But but the hard work has been done….39 in 3 years our list should be in its prime …

Oh hang on it’s essendumb

That’s absolutely true - although my methodology wasn’t to split the list in half by age and then to create two sides. In my mind, that would have lead to potential positional viability issues across the sides.

Instead I went role for role and placed the older options and younger options in each side.

It’s not a perfect split of age but gives a guide to where the development of a best side is transitioning to.

Parker was a gun in his bottom year in under 18’s and at that time was expected to go top 10, however, in his top year in the under 18’s, he had an average year. I will never understand how he slipped out of the top 20.

He was really built for his age too, he was a really good runner at school things like cross country too etc from memory.

Let’s fast track an even realer rebuild.

Trade Caddy to the highest bidder.

Kind of funny listening to the sash.

Talking about Dodoros contracts how they have potentially stuffed us (McKay to 2029, Langford, Redman, Parish, etc).

Do you want a full back who can’t defend anymore? (McKay)
We have a inside mid that only gets 20 touches every week and doesn’t really have a huge impact(Parish)…but they joked about could be all of them
Do you want a utility who really isn’t good at anything right now (Cox)

I mean, Mckay is on about 400k from next year. Hardly an issue going forward

The Age has rated West Coast,Carlton,Port,Tigers list builds

Who is leading the race?

1. West Coast: They are still inconsistent, but the kids are blossoming and a big leap is coming.
2. Carlton: This can be a quick fix, given the top-liners, experienced mid-tier group and increasing base of quality youth.
3. Port Adelaide: They might not have elite teenage talent, but there is upside in what is mostly a younger group with mid-20s top-liners.
4. Richmond: In Blair Hartley, we trust. There is no reason to doubt the Tigers in the long term, but fans might need to be patient.
5. Essendon: They’re playing catch-up after past draft misses, and departures, that left them short on stars, but they are getting back on track.

How are Carlton rated above Tigers and Essendon? Carlton should be last.

Carlton - And increasing base of quality youth. lay off the gear Marc McGowan lols

I would have

1.West Coast

2. Richmond

3. Essendon

4.Port

5. Carlton

I’d place Melbourne in this group too.

Far from convinced this burst of form this year is sustainable. Plenty of heavy lifting being done by their senior cohort still. Cliff will come for them IMO.

I beg to differ a bit.

Max Gawn and perhaps Fritsch (who is still just 29) aside, I don’t reckon their old blokes are actually pivotal to what they are doing at the moment.

Viney hasn’t been playing, Lever has been ordinary, they’ve continued to play good footy without Mihoceck.

There really aren’t too many other oldies left.

Plenty of mid 20’s guys going well for them but they’ll be around for a while yet.

They also currently have picks 5 & 13 in this upcoming draft as things stand which they can invest further in a couple of nice players to add to the recent kids they’ve brought in over the past few years.

Fair enough, perhaps I am underrating their mid-tier experience players like Sparrow, Chandler, Turner etc

I will say that Langford looks extremely good, they may have a generational talent with him.

Max Gawn being pivotal is an understatement, he is one of the best players in the game and arguably the greatest ruck in AFL history and if not, certainly top 3. He will be a monumental loss for them when he retires.

How does Melbourne have pick 5 this year? surely that can’t be right? they got GC first round pick this year and that isnt pick 5…

Yeah these sort of guys plus Kozzie, who has gone to another level, is where a lot of their growth has been and the younger kids have been allowed to do their thing.

Xavier Lindsay, Caleb Windsor & Xavier Taylor need to become the sort of players they expect of course which is still to be proven. Although Windsor has shown some very encouraging patches.
