List build - where are we? Where are we going next (Part 1)

Stewart’s got a contract to 2020
Outside chance of being demoted to the rookie list, but he’ll be on some sort of list.
(Same with Mutch.)

Not based on anything other than the Suns (read AFL) wanting/needing extra mature leaders, on all 3 lines, that can mentor/coach their talented youngsters before they too are ruined by lack of quality veterans. Hurley is well respected within the AFL for his balanced game and the Sun’s would hope that would be able to rub off on their youth.

Whilst it would be gross to see him playing for someone else, and it would definitely make our list worse, I feel we’d be able to cover him with our young defenders coming through and we aren’t exactly short on good role models. It’d also free up cap space which may help in any cap squeeze we may be facing.

They’ll likely have Burgoyne heading their way and I wouldn’t be surprised if Roughhead was given a year to provide 2MP, King and Lukosius (who I think will end up at CHF) some much-needed guidance

If he is contracted then surely we can’t put him on the rookie list?

“Cut” him and rookie draft him. Like we do every year with someone. Technically someone else can pinch him if they get him first.

If he is on a contract that would be costly to do that. You cut people who are out of contract not on them.

We’d still pay him the same contract once we re-rookie him so it’s not costing any more than it otherwise would

Not following.

If we rookie him we pay him his 2020 contract, in 2020.
If someone else takes him, they pay him his 2020 contract in 2020.

This is literally the same trick we’ve done with maybe half a dozen guys - Neagle, Aylett, Eades, Dea etc.
Costs nothing (extra).

Stupid idea.

Nope, just bring him in

If it saves us from having to cut someone we otherwise wanted to keep - or spend ~150k to cut them for good - it’s clearly not a stupid idea.

Even if it just lets us pick at ~70 instead of pick 30 in the rookie draft - it literally costs us nothing else, how is it be a bad thing.

I’ll never get why people hate it so much.

They won’t do it with Stewart, though.

Maybe Houlahan. Possibly Mutch.

I reckon they should dump the Rookie A list.

yep don’t see the point of it anymore, just expand the main list for that amount.

The rules are what they are, and the re-rookie-ing sort of deck shuffling might be the difference between getting a Clarke/Guelfi type or missing out.

Hard to knock Disco’s recent history with later picks - half of last night’s side. Has gone a long way to keeping this list competitive through the injuries.

Yep, it’s about as useful as the pre-season draft now

If MH wants to go and set himself up for his retirement, I wouldn’t be grudge him that. He has been a good servant of the club and the club owes him not the other way round.
