He doesn’t need to be scoring goals, if he’s helping others kick goals…… whether that is bringing the ball to ground, laying a shepherd in the forward 50, being a link in play that results in a goal, dragging his opponent away from a marking contest, etc.
Goals are no longer the be-all and end-all. It’s about the team’s score that matters, and we were the 4th highest scoring team.

Wright isn’t a key forward though. He’s a ruck-forward. It’s Francis that won’t play if we get a King type

Has he even done it in a ten week period or are you looking at a few games in isolation?
We are not winning the flag next year, we need to develop our young players not waste picks, cap space and list spots on players who will stunt our young talls development.
Getting some one like King is not stifling the development of our talls or wanting to win a flag next year or wasting picks
If our developing talls can’t get a game due to king then there will no harm done on maybe trading them to a club who a desperate for a key tall. we can then what ever currency we get for them use to improve our list in other areas
Getting King won’t hurt any of our younger players really, nor will it be bad from our list position.
Other than Jones, our two other key forwards are Francis (who i don’t think anyone expects to make it as a key forward you can build a team around, but fingers crossed he does), Eyre, a late pick, and Baldwin, who was only a rookie pick and was always highly speculative.
It would be if we traded for Weitering or some Key Back that would be a horrible decision as it would undermine our investment in Reid
King could come in and kick 70 goals, but if the forwardline isn’t functioning…. And we can’t kick a winning score, then what is the point? I’d prefer a team oriented Key forward who supports his team mates to kick goals, than a selfish one that kicks bags.

Kicking a winning score is much much more important than how many your Key forward kicks in a game.
Might be something to do with the fact that they barely played - Francis played forward, only in, what, 5 games? Eyre also haven’t had a proper chance to showcase why we matched the bid. Baldwin two games. McBride was injured most of time. I think it would be more practical to make the decision whether to draft (or trade in) a key forward next year, not this year as we need a good gauge of them first.
That’s basically Top 3-5 in the Coleman Medal, if not winning it.

Not sure they entirely care that much about stunting growth if we are getting a guaranteed gun in. And wouldn’t be perceived as wasting picks.
We went after McKay big time and obv are with King also.
If we were to land King, we might lose one of those young kpf’s anyway ourselves who we didn’t exactly spend big on to gain in first place. And just be left with adequate depth of developing talls

Nino a few weeks ago you were suggesting we get Mason Cox and Tim Obrien… are we talking about getting King or getting someone to fill in while our young talls develop like you said? Kings going to cost 2 or 3 first round picks, and we cant get him this year anyway which means our young players will get the year to develop that im talking about.

Expecting a Fwd-Ruck to kick 2-3 goals a game is ridiculous.
There was only one guy in the competition that kicked 3 a week. And only 15 others who kicked 2 or more a week.
2MP averaged 1.4 goals a game whilst spending about 25% game time in the ruck, averaging 9.8 hitouts per game.
If we played him as a full time forward, he would be somewhere near 1.9 goals a game. That’s pretty reasonable. Which then leaves us with a problem of who plays relief ruck. Sure, he has scope for improvement, but, we’ve seen him improve a lot this year already.
He’s improved no doubt by I expect him get better next year and be more impactful
I think everyone is. He was a steal at 39.
Wright is perfectly fine as the forward/ruck - he kicked 29 goals this year. I think the plan would be that Nick Bryan would at least compete for that spot while we try our the other guys mentioned in this thread alongside Jones. And then if none of them are showing anything in 12 months we have a crack at King.

He’s never going to be an A grader Nino so stop putting unfair expectations on him. He’ll always be a role player with the occasional cameo, just like Smack. There’s a reason he went cheap to us.
If you ignore the game he got to play on elite key defender Josh Schache (who’ll never play defence again in his life) he averaged a goal a game and goes goalless every second game. It’s who is his.
But that’s ok, his role is mostly to support Stringer and Jones, bring balls to ground and pinch hit ruck when Draper needs a rest. By doing so, he’ll kick 20 to 30 every year, which is all we need him for anyway
