Probably shouldnāt get attached to the idea of Kelly but jeez thatās a nice looking middle.
Brown and Berger both capable. Maybe bring in McVeigh for peanuts as a 16 game specialist/experienced campaigner. Need to pull out an ace in the draft like the Zerrett pick, maybe someone who can slot into half back for an apprenticeship. I think Howlett will continue and possibly even Hocking unless they want to play elsewhere through lack of opportunities. Also need to look for a back pocket to replace Bags sooner rather than later. Might be a tough ask to do this year. BJ wonāt be around for much longer. Who takes his utility role?
Ugh.i knew Iād forgotten someone. Still, BJs experience will be missed once heās gone. By 2019 our mids will be pretty young on average with Hepps and Zaka being the senior guys. Hurley and Hooker the elder statesmen as KPPs. Mutch could go places next season too. Also think Dea is handy depth. We really do need to bring in a star mid who can get hard ball. Iām concerned about the hole Jobe is going to leave and I know that in another universe that was going to be Myers but I just donāt know about that. Maybe his body is right now and he can build some form. Parish? Untried as a mid tractor.
I am not sure if Redman is going to make it. Has lots of tools and tricks, and is contracted for another couple of years to continue to improve. But I must admit that if he does end up playing regular senior footy for us, then Iāll be one putting my hand up saying I didnāt see it coming.
Not that he isnāt a good player. I just wonder if he is good enough. Our best 22 is looking pretty strong going forward.
The jury is still out with Redman, even if he starts smashing it in the VFL, you can never be certain a player will transition well to AFL. That all said, I really like the way Redman moves in the VFL, what he does with the ball, and am very hopeful.
It will be interesting to see him in the final on Sunday.
I watched the Youtube replay of last weekendās VFL match against Geelongā¦funnily enough, Francis/Ridley/Redman were all playing in a similar area of the ground, spread out across the half back lineā¦
I thought Redman probably shaded the other two. His kicking was pretty neat (better than Francis), and his aggression and tackling was good too (I think thatās an advantage over Ridley at this early stage).
I was contemplating Francis during the match - his marking is still great, his handballing is soundā¦he DOES have explosive pace, but just not for repeat effortsā¦what perplexes me most is the target selection and execution with kicking. Just rarely finds a loose team mate, or even a long 50/50 contest. It had me thinking again about one advantage of playing him as a marking forward, and that is that it simplifies his kicking decisions (ie. take the mark and just line up for the goals!).
