Local U16s played through a downpour on a turf wicket this morning so my son’s seniors game got called off due to the pitch being unplayable. Day 2 of his game and they were set for a big win. Now it’s a draw.
Would have been fine if they had pulled the covers on when the rain started.
This is often why juniors are played on hard wicket, even if the senior club plays on turf. You don’t end up with situations like this where a pitch gets chopped up with kids playing through rain. Most wouldn’t have a clue in terms of covering wickets, and aside from U16 wouldn’t be strong enough to do it.
Don’t clubs have dedicated groundskeepers?
We have juniors on every week before the seniors and it’s up to the curator to look after the pitch and cover it with the help of others. He has the final say too on whether it remains covered to preserve the integrity of the pitch for seniors
No. Our club is in City of Melbourne and it’s council run. They prepare the wickets. But as far as game day is concerned that’s left up to the umpires to decide when play ceases due to rain and the covers are the responsibility to the home team.
Oh, yeah that’s a different setup to us. Over here the council look after the oval and things such as mowing, watering etc but don’t touch the centre wickets. The club funds all turf pitches and has to employ staff or rely on volunteers to cut, roll and maintain the deck. Our curator lives near by and is able to head down midweek etc if pitch need to be covered. Most teams will have dedicated club people close to the grounds to do the same if required
Not all of grades play on turf and so many of the grounds have hard wickets. The council a couple of years ago mowed over our hard wicket pitch and destroyed the matting.
At the turf grounds the councils were notorious for the sprinklers soaking pitches in the middle of night so the clubs approached the council and now the centre square has seperate watering systems that the club controls. Ours is unique aswell in that the deck is plumbed into rain water rather than mains and I think it helps in the health of the grass
Well that was fun.
Two day cricket started today and in Grade 1 no other team made over 172 but we finished on 5/398 off our 75 overs.
Our seconds are in trouble after day 1 but the thirds and fourths who play in the one day comp won comfortably
My game was on the very small Dennington hard-wicket. Captain of the visiting team won the toss and opened up. He was out 4 balls into the 40th over on 236 with 25 sixes.
Then bowled the home team out for 123, which took up 39.5 overs. At least 15 minutes lost climbing fences and searching through the scrub, where there were scary slithering sounds.
There was a 20-ish English girl (a Manc) keeping wickets for the home team, at least as good as most of the keepers in that grade. 4 byes in 356 runs and 2 of them off a bad bounce. Admittedly it didn’t pass the bat all that much.
Dennington is the westernmost suburb of Warrnambool on the A1.
Div 2 of the Warrnambool and Moyne DCA. It’s an anomaly in this grade. Dennington have teams in all 5 men’s grades and this team is definitely not their third XI. That’s their veterans’ team in Div 3.
Most of the other teams in this grade are second XI’s and quite a reasonable standard.
Unfortunately not! We were a sunday game this week, had it been saturday would have had lovely weather
Hoping the weather has cleared up by tomorrow evening as I have (somewhat forcibly) convinced my wife to play in the women’s
The top scorer in both innings last game was extras but its a bit of fun
