Sungold T20 quarter finals played in Warrnambool today.

Port Fairy comfortably beat Tyrendarra (Portland comp)
Nestles beat Pomborneit (South-West) with 2 balls to spare. Easton Wood played for Pomborneit (made 2, didn’t bowl)

College (Hamilton) beat West Gambier.
Irrewarra (Colac) beat Swifts/Great Western (Horsham)

Semis and final to be played Thursday.

Had a win today. Lost our first 2 after Xmas to take us from 2nd to 4th. Played 2nd today and chased down 188 in the 2nd last over. We were cruising at one point, 4 down with about 40 to get at around 4 an over but after the 5th wicket partnership was broken it was a bit of a procession. Got moved from opening to #5, which I didn’t mind given the ball followed me in the field and I’ll be 40 in 5 weeks time. Saw the team home with 57*. Got the runs in the penultimate over 9 down. I think we will be 2nd or 3rd after that.

Played up in a higher grade yesterday due to unavailabilities. Bowling first we dismissed the opposition for 136, but it could’ve been for a lot less with 3 dropped catches early on. Thankfully it didn’t cost us too much. We got a 14 year old lad in our team who is going to play Premier cricket in the next 2-3 years. Mainly a bat but also bowls very good left arm pace. He took 7/23 including a hat-trick (all bowled, the hat-trick delivery the batter shouldered arms). From 1/70 they lost 4/0 and then from there we were in control. Took a one-handed diving catch at mid-wicket, just one of those ones where it hits the hand perfect and it sticks!

In reply we had a shaky start and were 2/22 before a steadying 3rd wicket partnership righted the ship. I got in at 5 and felt good from the start, ball was striking the middle of the bat, small ground and a good pitch (albeit the outfield was very lush). Despite some late wickets as we closed in on victory we won by 4 wickets with about 6 overs to spare. I hit the winning run and finished 40*.

If you’re not careful they will keep you in the ones.

Yeah not that keen on 1s. I’d be cooked once they finish their extensive pre game warm-ups. Get tired just watching it! But I’ll likely retain my spot in the B Grade team now, which will do me fine. Hit some form at the right time of the year as finals approaches, since moving to the middle order have averaged 45. The red inks help a bit. Both grades I’ve played for this year are in and around the 4.

We sealed top spot last week with 2 games to go so yesterday changed the batting order around to give some others a much needed hit. We batted first and after our 35 overs we were 2/130. I’m 20 not out.
We then bowled and the opposition are 4/120. Dropping 6 catches didn’t help us much.
We resume next week with a heap of wickets in the shed so hopefully we can get the job done.

Retained my spot in the team and backed up last week with another 44 yesterday. Played the top team, got sent in and made 7/210. Openers put on 70-odd and that allowed us in the middle order to play with freedom. Got out trying to slash one outside off and got caught behind. Bowled and fielded really well and rolled them for 147. Comprehensive team effort, everyone contributed. Great day!

Our firsts look dead and buried a fortnight ago after a real poor loss left them two wins outside the 4 with 2 rounds to play but pulled off a pretty impressive outright yesterday to miraculously keep in touch heading into the final round but still need to win and have other results go our way.
Rolled them for 112 last week and had 14 overs to bat last week and finished at 1/35. Came out yesterday and lost two very early but then our gun hit 74no off 28 balls to allow us to declare at 3/153. Rolled them for 96 which gave us about 30 overs to get the 50 odd. Did it none down in 8 overs.
Our u17’s finished top at end of minor round and were going for their 7th flag in 9 years but got flogged in the semis which was disappointing. They do get a slight chance of redemption as they have made it through to the state T20 GF played at Adelaide Oval today which is a huge buzz for the lads

We had another good win. We ended up 9/286 off our 70 overs . We threw the batting order around a bit to give some players a hit. I batted reasonably well and run myself out on 44.
Bowling we were never under any pressure and they ended up with 9/230. We would have dropped 10 catches. I bowled 8 overs and ended up with 2/24. Onto the final round next week with top spot sealed.

Well our U17’s just won the State T20 comp at Adelaide Oval and got to have a team photo on the ground. Some super excited kids (and parents)

I went to the women’s finals at Reid Oval today. Under 17’s went 20 overs and Allansford Panmure beat Nestles by 20 odd runs…and Nestles scraped home by 1 wicket in the seniors.

A real family day at Warrnambool’s main sporting precinct.

36-40 degrees for the last 7 days and then today abandoned due to rain

Our rain didn’t really start till 9-10am, but has rained quite a lot since then.

We weren’t officially called off, but the ground I went to had puddles near the covers that simply wouldn’t have dried out, even if it had stopped raining. Very little wind.

No games have started Div 1 or Div 2. Divs 3 and 4 might have some games started as long as they get underway before 3 (need 25 overs per side and the possibility of that runs out about 3).

Good thing we got washed out yesterday…had the Under 15 Boys granny at Reid Oval today. Meant to start at 10.30 but the deck needed uncovering and patching. Merrivale (south west suburb) batted first and made 6-147. The format makes it easier for middle order bats because no bowler can bowl more than 4 overs until 9 players have bowled at least 2. Total 45 overs, maximum 8.

Mortlake Cobden ended up winning with 4 balls to go at 8 down. Their captain was bowled for 48 when they needed 1 run. 4 Walshes in the Mortlake Cobden team, all cousins of Sam Walsh, and their coach says there’ll be 6 next season, and a sister has already been snapped up by a Melbourne club. Also Georgia Wareham’s young brother, Sam, played.

Merrivale benefit from players from other western Warrnambool clubs’ players because they don’t fill a juniors team at that age.

Emphatic win yesterday, batted first and made 6/217 off our 45. I missed out, made just 3 before getting caught down the leg side. Always a frustrating way to get out when you get a little feather on a ball drifting down leg. In reply they were never in the hunt. They had a couple of guys who could hit but we knew they’d lose patience and throw their wickets away. Once that happened it was all over bar the shouting, and we rolled them for 99 just after the drinks break. The win now sees us jump to 2nd on percentage with 2 games left before finals. Team has gelled really well, our batters have all been in the runs the past 2-3 weeks and we have a disciples bowling outfit and some of the young kids we have are elite in the field, 2 run outs yesterday.

So due to the amount of games being lost due to heat and rain this year our association executives of which I’m a part of decided to squeeze in one extra round in at the end of season. The decision was made about a month ago and as Round 1 was abandoned it was decided to reschedule that as the final round but as a one dayer. It had unanimous support thankfully as it contributed to my mob squeezing into finals.
Going into this last round we were 5th and playing the top team, 2nd placed team had the 6th placed team and 3v4. Only half a win separating 2nd to 5th and the top team a further half a win clear. So with all fi als up for grabs and home ground advantage up for grabs we get to Saturday and 3/4 of the games were abandoned due to rain. The 3v4 game was dry as a bone so they started and as soon as our game heard that news I think there was a slight “gentleman’s agreement” with the ump to call our game off as with one of 3v4 going to lose then a draw would see us in and the top team finish top. In the end we finished 4th and the team that was sitting 3rd all year lost and missed out

Stiff for the team that missed out. They go from playing finals to missing because no one else got on.

With the weather this season it all evens out I suppose
They got an outright against the worst team in the comp which everyone also beat comfortably whilst our game was abandoned against them.

Our mob will be defending 248 next week to stave off relegation. (Playing bottom)

This is after not being able to defend 347 against the top side and chase down 165 against the 2nd placed team the last two matches…

Finals weekend was upon us and a mixed bag. Our D grade which play in the A5’s and is a one day comp snuck into 4th and were pumped by the top side. Only made 84 and they passed that 2 down inside 20 overs. Mostly kids on our side and the opposition has a few elderly sandbaggers that are more than capable of playing up the grades but only want to play one dayers. Our B grade that plays in the A2’s lost a close one. Only just made finals and came up against easily the best side in the comp who is also a A grade side. Bit of drizzle around and got sent in on a green top and were in strife at 9/54 but a last wicket stand of 68 gave us something to defend and when we had them 4/10 at stumps yesterday we thought we may have been a chance even though they sent in 2 night watchman yesterday. Had them 6/60 today but their skipper took the game away from us and they passed us 7 down.
Our A1’s also finished fourth and also played the top side who have a very strong bowling attack which has got them to the top at the end of the minor round. We started well at 0/84 and then even at 3/150 we looked in control before crashing to be all out for 185 and had they 1/49 at stumps. Got a wicket early today and then they looked comfortable at 2/77 but you could see the weather coming in and the ball started hooping sideways and next thing they have lost 8/18 and all out 95. Within about 20 mins of the game being completed it absolutely hosed down so we caught a break there.

Our last round and we played third on the ladder. After a pitiful fielding display we were chasing 302. We had a really solid start to our innings and were on track with the run rate. With 20 overs to go we needed 5 an over with 7 wickets in hand. I was out just after that for 88 and it triggered a mini collapse. We ended up passing them 8 down with 2 overs to spare. A great win going into finals next weekend.
