Easy win today. Opposition decided to bat first and we rolled them for 146. Chased the runs 2 down off about 25 overs. I got 36, they bowled short ■■■■ and that’s right in my wheel house. 7 fours, mainly the pull shot. Got out lbw. Was spewing, threw away a 50+ score but that’s the best I’ve felt all season. Keen to back it up next week. The win should get us into the top 4. Happy days!

Big loss yesterday. With a heap unavailable I was promoted a grade along with 3 others. We bowled first on a really slow ground and restricted them to 115 off 40 overs.
Our batting didn’t go to plan and we slumped to 4/14 and then 8/30. My contribution was 1. We were all out for 55 in a disappointing loss.

40 better than the Sydney thunder!

That was mentioned.

We had the Under 17 Country Week here last week, with 2 teams from Warrnambool, one each from Colac, South West (Terang, Camperdown, Cobden area), Horsham, Wimmera-Mallee (teams along the Calder like Birchip, St Arnaud), Hamilton and Portland. 50-overs Monday and Tuesday, 2 T20’s Wednesday, 50 overs Thursday, then the Grand Final at Reid Oval on Friday. The teams that didn’t make the final had T20’s in the morning.

Warrnambool Gold ended up beating Colac in the final, chasing down 140 odd at 3 down.

I had Hamilton 3 times, Horsham and Portland twice and Wimmera-Mallee once. Couple of young guys two keep an eye on…all rounder Henry Bensch and keeper-batsman Jack Austin from Hamilton, and all rounder Connor Weidemann and quick Joey Nagorcka from Horsham. A couple of them might prefer football so worth keeping an eye on GWV Rebels the next 2 years.

And this weekend finished the T20 comp, divided into 4 groups of 4, and the leaders of each group played semis yesterday and the final this evening.

Port Fairy haven’t won a game in the regular season but went through this undefeated and chased down 96 without losing a wicket and 4 overs to spare. If only they could get those 11 guys together every week.

Nestles beat Allansford Panmure and Port Fairy beat Dennington to make the final.

First games back after the break were scheduled for tomorrow but going to be 40 tomorrow so games all abandoned

We’ve had to send out the association’s heat policy round to all umpires.

Expected to be 34 in Warrnambool but we have games 25km and 50km further inland, so could be much hotter. Our cutoff temp is 38.

Happy I’m playing on Sunday. A pleasant 22 degrees forecast!

Got to say I struggled today. We were up at Bushfield, about 12k up from Warrnambool on the highway to Mortlake. It got up to 34.3 at Warrnambool Airport.

North Warrnambool batted first and got to 8/143 with one opener making 73*. 59yo now but been a legend in the area.

During the break, I thought i was going to chunder but a decent break for a No 2 helped. Nirranda got off to a flying start and were past 0/100 at the first drinks break. The synthetic strip on the pitch is only 6’ wide and anything missing the green is a no-ball. One of the openers danced down to a no-ball and got stumped and headed off. Oi, I said, you can’t be stumped off a no-ball, caused a certain lack of gruntlement.

Struggled again after the first drinks break but only took 5 or 6 overs to finish the job, losing 2 wickets.

Absolutely german-booted after the game.

So today was officially the second day of Round 7 but due to weather we ended up having a one dayer this week and this was only our third game for the season!
Our A grade opener made his third consecutive ton but was filthy on himself for not going on and getting a big one as he usually has at least one score up around the high 180’s plus. Goes at a fair clip too normally, his 3 knocks were
109 (52)
117 (56)
102 (53)

We played our first game after the Christmas break (had a bye last week) and we’re playing second on the ladder. They are the only team to beat us this season. We batted first on a slowish ground. I batted 3 and was in the 6th over. Me and the other opener both retired at 50 but I wouldn’t call my innings good. I really struggled. We ended up 4/178 off our 35 overs.
We bowled really well and picked up 3 early wickets. They never recovered and we got them all out for 68. A really good win that consolidates our position on top of the ladder.

Voluntarily retired or the rules of your comp?

Rules of the comp. Retire at 50 in one day games and 100 in two day games.

I’ve never heard of that before in senior cricket, interesting indeed.
In our junior comp the under 11’s, 13’s and 15’s have to retire at 50 but can come back in once everyone has batted (one of our lads made 105no off 50 in the U13’s yesterday)
Under 17’s play under senior rules with no retirements

It’s pretty common here in the lower grades. Means good players can’t just play lower grades and hit double centuries each week.

Yes, I can see that as a problem and we call them “sandbaggers” over here.
Our first 3 grades are 2 day cricket only whilst Grades 4 and 5 are one dayers only so you get a few older blokes that only want to play one dayers which is understandable and maybe only play every second week but thankfully most of the decent players only want to play at the better levels and prefer 2 day cricket. We also have hard and firm rules where you can only drop one club grade at a time which pretty much stops the good cricketers floating between the grades. We are also pretty lucky that the real good cricketers generally are financially compensated and they all want to play in Div 1 and so you will often see guys move clubs if they get relegated

It’s the first time they have done this in our comp and it’s only for our grade. I’m assuming it’s a trial and they’ll look at it at the end of the season. I’m not a massive fan of it but understand why they are doing it.

Pothunters…although that includes guys who drop down the grades to win a flag. Their captains are called bandits.

We only have those rules in juniors and women’s comps.

In our comp, they also had to scrap the retired batsman coming back in at the fall of the last wicket as you use to get numbers 9 and 10 just “accidentally” leaving balls on middle stump to get the retired batsman back in.

This is one of my fave examples. Bloke playing in his clubs 3rds when he would have been one of the better players in the 1s. Averages 188 through the regular season and then gets run out for a duck in the losing semi final!
