Local Footy 2015

Whilst local footy is still a good 5 months or so away from kicking off, there looks to be plenty of movement in the player market. Aberfeldie have signed former Carlton midfielder and 2011 Sandover Medallist Luke Blackwell, and by all reports appear close to having Brock McLean on board as well. Would be a couple of big signings to get guys straight out of the WAFL and AFL respectively and should push Abers towards breaking their 1st Grade premiership drought. Jason and Cameron Cloke have bothed sign on with Craigieburn, whilst Daniel Harris (ex- Nth and GC) and Ben Warren (Nth) join Pascoe Vale. Also some movement with coaches in the EDFL, Mal Michael won’t be back with Abers after 2 successive Grand Final defeats, Dean Wallis is coach of Doutta Stars and Shannon Grant takes charge of Greenvale replacing Adam McPhee.

Luke Ball ran out for Old Xavs yesterday and by all reports, went well.

Just how much pull does Daniel Harford have at St. Kevins?

The undefeated SKOBS already have:

Steven Salopek
Jordan Gysberts
Stephen Gilham

In the senior side.

But, the scoop is from this morning and that Warren Tredrea has now signed on down there.

Jeepers!!!

Is there any confirmation on this?

The source was VAFA Sunday on Southern FM yesterday morning. They would know…haven’t found anything yet.

A good trivia question - who are the 3 players to have played 256 games of VFL and AFL football, and what else do they have in common?

We’ve had this one. Can’t remember them all (J Brown was one) but they’re all from Warnammbool or some other club in the Western district.

Cowboy Neale, Leon Cameron and Jonathan Brown…all from the same Warrnambool club, South Warrnambool
Abers have just signed former Richmond and Adelaide ruckman Angus Graham for the remainder of the season.

Mark Blake has gone to Thomson in the GFL.

North Old Boys/St. Patricks Ballarat notched up a club milestone on Saturday, playing their 1000th match at Toorak Park against Prahran/Assumption College. Earlier this year, the 2 clubs played a home match in Ballarat, an annual tradition.

The VAFA and the VCFL have named their squads for the matches to be held on July 11 at Queen Elizabeth Oval Bendigo, for the biennial Brian Molony Cup.

3 matches will be held: Under 19’s, B-D4 v VCFL Districts and the full senior squads. The final match sees the best of the Geelong, Ballarat, Bendigo, Ovens and Murray and so on.

Some of those selected in the VAFA senior squad - Raphael Clarke, Cameron Howat, James Strauss, TRISTAN CARTLEDGE, Jordan Gysberts, Steven Salopek.

The VCFL senior squad has the following (to be coached by Peter Knights): Steven Stroobants, Will Martinello, Grant Weeks, Dean Polo, Justin Van Unen.

Bit of a celebration for Ormond this year. For those who don’t know how a district team could be so successful in the Ammos, Ormond had an era that would be best described as amazing. From 1985 to 1990, the boys from Ormond managed 5 senior and 4 reserves premierships in A Grade. This was celebrated at the MCC Members Dining Room last Saturday night.

Safe to say we've thrown everything at a flag in the last few years. About time we got one. Boy will it be be nervy finals series though.

I’ve been really impressed by the quality of footy Abers play. The foot skills aee a class above anything else in EDFL Premier. Pascoe Vale are obviously a threat but I reckon Greenvale is the dark horse. They gave Abers a big fright Round 1, they meet up again this week at Greenvale.

Some really interesting results in the EDFL on the weekend.

As mentioned, Pascoe Vale look the real deal smashing Avondale Heights. Pascoe Vale has the two Ross brothers, Vezpremi, Ben Warren, Hardingham and Daniel Harris on their list. Thats a decent collection of ex AFL players.

Other big result was promoted West Coburg beating derby rival Northern Saints by 110 points. And this is with a basically no name squad.

I’ll be moving to the area so have taken an interest in the comp. Must say I was impressed with the standard, the EFL (Eastern Footy League) for many years claimed they were the best Metropolitan footy league in Melbourne, and I’d say EDFL has to be the equal of that, or perhaps ever better than it now. Better thing is you don’t get charged to watch, at most EFL games it’s $5 or so to get in, I just rocked up on Saturday and had a look.

Current rankings of the competitions, based on the recently held Metro Championships:

  1. VAFA
  2. Eastern FL
  3. Northern FL
  4. Essendon District FL
  5. Western Region FL
  6. Southern FL

Big problem with the EDFL is that it has teams of 6 vastly different distinct standards, but only enough teams for 3 divisions. Far too unbalanced.

Also breaking their duck for the year was Lilydale, beating South Croydon in the Eastern FL Division 1.

Bit of fun out at Hadfield it seems…3 blokes kicking 10 each and a 315 point win. Jeepers!

Watched Abers minus Brock McLean and Courtney Johns comfortably account for Strathmore by 94 points at Lebanon Reserve. Kyle Reimers kept in check with just the one goal, so ominous signs for the rest of the finalists. Abers finished with an 18-0 record and a percentage of 278, 4 games clear of 2nd placed Greenvale, who they will meet next week in the Qualifying Final at Coburg City Oval. Pascoe Vale plays Keilor in the Elimination Final.

Good, balanced league right there lol . . .

Greenvale have a percentage north of 200 as well. They beat the winless Northern Saints by 43 goals. Must admit watching Aberfeldie is pretty awesome, their skill for a local team is brilliant. The fact I now live down the road from Clifton Park makes it easy to go down and take a look. Greenvale are the only team to have given them a proper game this year, Round 1 Abers came back from 4 goals down at 3/4 time to overrun them, and even the 2nd match-up it was a 7-goal Abers win but they were made to work for it.

Forgot to mention, one of the two field umpires was a young woman. Pretty capable too. Had the respect of the players.

Another thing is how combined football and netball are in the bush. Same teams, same colours, same fixtures, good mixing of spectators at each others’ sports.

AFL Victoria have seemingly headed down a road of having the metro leagues playing the country leagues in a statewide interleague competition.

Looks like the VAFA are probably not going to participate. But, everyone else will.

Imagine these match-ups:

Geelong v Eastern
EDFL v Bendigo
Northern v Ballarat
WRFL v Ovens and Murray
Southern v Goulburn Valley

And so on.

Dingley beat east Brighton to go outright top of ladder

Mernda have broken their duck in the NFL beating Thomastown.
