Local footy giant facing massive salary cap penalty

A major competition is believed to be on the verge of announcing a severe punishment for one of Melbourne’s biggest local footy clubs over alleged salary cap breaches extending back three years.

The breaches are believed to have occurred in 2022 and 2023.

One of Victoria’s most successful football clubs is believed to be facing severe sanctions over salary cap breaches.

Rumours have swirled in recent days the metropolitan football giant will learn of its punishments this week.

This masthead understands red flags were raised when one individual was interviewed by AFL Victoria officials.

The salary cap breaches are alleged to have occurred between 2022 and 2023.

It’s believed other clubs in the league will be briefed on the situation on Thursday afternoon.

AFL Victoria, the league and club have been contacted for comment.

The state’s governing body conducted 120 audits at the end of last season. It’s believed a number of the investigations are ongoing.

If a club is found guilty of breaches it is up to the league and its board to decide any punishments.

I find it bizarre that the club you’re referring to is nicknamed the Blues, yet they have red in their colours. LOL!

Reportedly spent $300,000 on a $130,000 cap :grimacing:

ā– ā– ā– ā– !! Yeah well that’s well and truly out of the ā€œhonest mistakeā€ category. Where the breaching of the cap appears to be systemic and they knowingly exceeded it, then the penalty must be harsh. Points deduction for 2025 (and a big one too given than even a 3 or 4 game penalty would still see them likely qualify for finals) and potentially stripping of premierships won in that time period.

Who is the ex afl player that plays there?

So that’s the secret to Mick McGuane’s coaching prowess!

They have plenty but Damien Cavka (ex West Coast) is the one who has been referenced as the rat but he’s denied that.

Stripped of premiership(s) and playing for no points (ie will finish last) in 2025 is what’s been floated.
Plus no doubt a financial sanction.

This message has reportedly been doing the rounds amongst the players, sponsors etc:

To our loyal fans, players, staff, sponsors, and the broader football community,

Today, I stand before you on behalf of the Keilor Football Club to address a serious issue that has deeply affected our club and the trust you have placed in us. We are here to take full responsibility for our actions and to apologize unequivocally for breaching the salary cap regulations.

The recent findings have made it clear that our club failed to adhere to the rules that govern fair play and integrity in our sport. By exceeding the salary cap, we not only compromised the integrity of the competition but also betrayed the trust of everyone who supports and believes in our club. For this, we are truly sorry.

We accept the decision to strip us of our premiership. While this is a painful and humbling consequence, we understand that it is necessary to uphold the principles of fairness and accountability that are fundamental to our game. We do not seek to make excuses or deflect blame. The responsibility lies entirely with us, and we must face the consequences of our actions.

To our players and coaching staff, who worked tirelessly on the field to achieve success, we apologize for tarnishing your hard-earned achievements. You deserved better from us, and we let you down.

To our fans, who have stood by us through thick and thin, we are deeply sorry for betraying your trust. Your passion and dedication are the lifeblood of this club, and we have failed to honor that.

To our sponsors and partners, who have supported us both financially and morally, we regret the damage this has caused to your faith in our club. We are committed to rebuilding that trust and demonstrating that we are worthy of your continued support.

To the broader football community, we apologize for undermining the integrity of the game we all love. Football is built on fairness, respect, and sportsmanship, and we have fallen short of those values.

Moving forward, we are committed to making meaningful changes to ensure this never happens again. We will implement stricter internal controls, provide comprehensive education on compliance for all staff, and foster a culture of transparency and accountability at every level of the club.

We know that words alone are not enough to repair the damage we have caused. It will take time, effort, and a genuine commitment to change. But we are determined to earn back your trust and to rebuild our club on a foundation of integrity and respect.

Once again, we apologize for our actions and the disappointment we have caused. We are deeply sorry, and we are committed to doing better—for our club, for our community, and for the game we all cherish.

Thank you for listening.

Keilor Football Club

If that’s a true statement that’s been released then bloody hell! If they play for zero premiership points then I’d assume that would mean automatic relegation to Div 1. And I bet a lot of the blokes involved at the club that have been there for the cash would jump off. Huge!

Strathmore, Pascoe Vale and other EDFL teams would be scrambling right now to burn any evidence and to make sure everyone shuts up lol

If people think this is isolated to Keilor they’re kidding themselves.

Deer Park a few years ago would have been an interesting investigation!

It now costs $407 for my boy to play U13s in suburban Brisbane (excluding uniform, boots). 40% of that goes to the AFL. Thank fark there’s only one of him!

Fark the salary caps in local footy. Glad teams cheat the system and it will continue on

Why is that?

Because I don’t believe in salary caps. At any club I’ve been at as a player, coach or administrator they have all cheated the system in one way or another.

Interesting. Up here in Hervey Bay I don’t think the AFL takes anything. The League takes $70 or thereabouts. We charge our kids around $160 I think. Seniors pay $200. And you get to wear a Bombers jumper!

Re-jig of player points is the way to go imo.
Justin Van Unen is up to senior club number 10!
Slap him with 1 point loading per club and see how many want his signature.
