It could have been much, much worse. From the Washington Post

What gets into the head of a person to want to just slaughter school children?

I don’t get these guys urges at all. A lot seem born out of domestic violence issues, with a lot of these guys having had a bad history of abusing woman, and I’ve never understood that either. Once upon a time it was maybe to get a name for yourself, but there are so many now nobody remembers who did which one.

It is really weird, and seems to be much of a US phenomena.

Maybe. Or it could be that because they have easier access to guns (powerful ones) and a culture that sort of goes all “meh” about it, they can act on the urges. If we had access to those guns here in Aus I wonder if we would see more of it here?

There are other nations with plenty of guns that don’t have these issues. In Australia we would probably have more mass shootings (we certainly did before the gun buyback), but gun fatalities were tending down even before the buyback.

I would hazard a guess paranoia, or any number of other undiagnosed or untreated psychological or psychiatric issues play a part: plus a country where it’s easier and cheaper to get a gun than see a medical specialist.

Yeah we were discussing that today at work. Most of us just can’t get our heads around anyone who wants to kill kids, in this type of situation, but also in the domestic abuse scenario as well.

This is an incredible graphic comparison.

All the gun deaths in Australia this year:
ausgundeaths

And here are the US gun deaths - the red figures are the victims of the LAs Vegas shootings. (not sure if the figure includes today’s CA shootings):

Edit: Discourse doesn’t display the full figure. The deaths go on for another TWO HUNDRED AND TWENTY THREE rows!

See full figure here:

It is a mix of the “me first” culture, easy access to guns, and lack of investment in treating mental illnesses. The fact that the folks making the laws are in bed with the NRA is just another drop of fuel on the fire.

My wife and I discussed what my daughter’s school’s “lock down” procedures are yesterday. Then, the two of us looked at each other with the WTF are we even doing!

Treasury Secretary Mnuchin and his wife have made a habit of ostentatious displays. This, from today, likely not the best look given the debate on the Republican tax bill.

There is also controversy on why the mrs is dressed like Kylo Ren but that is for the Star Wars thread…

Probably spends a fair bit of time hanging with Jabba the Hut.
.

In her last few conversations with her son, Annie said he sounded desperate and distraught over his relationship with his neighbours, who he said were cooking meth that created fumes that were harming his nine dogs.
“All of a sudden, now I’m on a cliff and there’s nowhere to go,” she recalled Neal telling her. “No matter where I go for help here, I get nobody who will help me. All they are doing is trying to execute me here.”
Neal’s sister, Sheridan Orr, said she had not talked to her brother in months, but that he had struggled with mental illness and at times had a violent temper.
She said she believed he was addicted to drugs.

The guy was a nutter who hated everyone by the sounds of it. How the hell does a guy with his history get access to powerful weapons?

Not just that. He was out on bail after stabbing a neighbor. And, the neighbors had often asked the police to intervene as he was busy shooting guns at all hours of the day. This a systemic failure on all levels. The more I read the more incredible it is that the children escaped.

Throughout my entire schooling life I only did 2 intruder drills. 1 during primary school 1 during highschool. The common consensus for both events were that we were ■■■■■■ if a shooter got in.

Resolving guns in the US will need a republican to take up the fight. As John Howard did in Australia, and John Cain did when he deregistered the BLF. It needs “one of their own” to make it a non-ideological objective.
