Last night the Board and Executive of the Essendon Football Club ratified the decision to become an official signatory to Australian Marriage Equality.

The Club joins the AFL and more than 1,900 organisations to publicly support equal rights for all Australians.

CEO, Xavier Campbell, said the decision is aligned with the Club’s vision to be the most inclusive, successful and respected sporting Club in Australia.

“The Essendon family is welcoming of all people, regardless of gender, race, religion or sexuality,” Campbell said.

“We celebrate diversity and champion change because we truly believe everyone should be treated equally, and everyone matters.

I don’t have an issue with this at all, but I do have an issue with our “vision statement”. Why isn’t our vision first and foremost to win premierships? All the other stuff is great and certainly needed, but should be second to our vision of winning games of footy and bringing another premiership to the club.

Sneak attack? You’d think that our security detail would be all over the likelihood of someone approaching for a hand shake and then sneakily head butting someone.

Joyce and Abbott attacks were effectively coward punches and should be condemned. There is zero excuse for doing it.
