Match Review Thread: Bad News Bears def Worse News Bombers

As much as I hate collecting the wooden spoon this shouldn’t come as a surprise. No list could take the hit we did and hope to be competitive week in week out.

The game reminded me a lot of the cralscum one earlier this year. At times it was almost benny hill theme music worthy. I think what makes it frustrating is watching a team play themselves out of a game as opposed to being beaten by a better team. Don’t think we know what to do if we are favourites. We have played well when we have been written off.

Positives
Francis. Kid can play and is attacking.
Parish. First year player averaging 20 touches a game.
Langford. Smooth mover will make it.
Laverde. Fantastic mark very aggressive.
Hams. Slowly building.
Merrett. Enough said.
Goodard. Deserves to keep playing. Can make a difference next year.
No. 1 draft pick. Jackets did a secret air punch post game.

Negatives
Cooney. Can have a send off game. No more. No ticker no effort. Going through the motions would rather Jerrett or any other fills that role.
Dempsey. Always been a fan but gee it’s not looking good. That play in the second? Where he gave away 2 frees in front of goal in about 15 seconds and then the 50. Really sums him up over the last few years. Just doesn’t seem to have the right mindset. Pity
Smack. Papers are stamped
Downtown brown. If he converts those chances it’s an ok game. Not dominant enough to miss sitters.
Tippa. Kicking for goal. Will I be banned for writing that? Even tippa couldn’t kick straight today. Wtf has the world gone mad.
Goal kicking. Can’t ever win a game kicking like that.
Wooden spoon. Stuff it to me it doesn’t count.

I reckon Dempsey is finished, papers stamped and he knows it.

his papers were supposedly stamped at the end of last year, oh but yeah he has reinvented himself as a forward hasn’t he, jso he deserves another 10 years cos you know somehow he may be good at some point in time in the future for some unknown reason.

Just quietly... Feb 5 2013- 24 July 2016

What a time to be alive. Geez we’ve had a rough trot as fans. The fact we’re still here passionately debating things such as whether that injury prone Geelong bloke Mitch Brown should play forward or back is a credit to us.

Underrated post

I have changed my mind Langford ok, Goodbye or trade or whatever, Smack, Gleeson, Brown,

Hopefully we get Dew to succeed Woosha in 2018.
Uh Oh!

This is going to be fun.

I am so farking angry it is unbelievable. I've been to our two biggest losses of the last five years and that was...so much worse than that... That is the sort of game that ■■■■■ players just by playing in it. So many targets for my anger I barely know where to start.

Got past the swear filter too!! What a win!

Hopefully we get Dew to succeed Woosha in 2018.

It’s saucy, no one takes him seriously.

I'm just so amazed at how ubiquitous the bad goal kicking is. It's not just one forward, it's everyone!

It would be nice if we played against a team who wasn’t banging every goal, no matter how far out or how slight the angle.

Brisbane 20-8
Richmond 16-6
St Kilda 17-7
WC 20-10

Even Freo kicked 20-6!

Easy to kick goals when you’re on your own in the goal square.

So damn frustrated. If we play close to the way we did the last two weeks we win. Despite losing the clearances we were good around the ground to make up for it. Shithouse pretty much across the board today.

Not so fussed about Rockliff, as he is hard to stop and most teams struggle with him (just go head to head, great learning) but I have noticed Rich gets tagged quite a bit off half back, but nobody goes near him virtually all game. Maybe some of the opposition coaches see it as important for some reason and it would be a good learning curve for a younger player. But nooooooo, not our coaches, we’re to good for that. Even an attacking style can have some shut down capacity.

Our kicking was horrible, but I don’t believe Brisbane was that arsey. Their forwards just kicked the goals they should be, it’s what they’re supposed to do and should be the norm, we are just shell shocked cause we are so bad at it.

Hopefully we get Dew to succeed Woosha in 2018.

Yet you still acknowledge my presence.

A couple of weeks ago McKenna went up one handed against StKilda in the backline and dropped the mark - Saints goal. Today almost exactly the same - Lions goal. Where is the coaching? Then he runs into an open goal and misses as well as the set shot miss. Last week 6 k 6 h and this week 7 k 7 h. How is his skills and his output acceptable for AFL? It’s not the suburban or country league?

I can't be the only one that is blaming the coaching panel for tanking that game.

They simply did not care enough about our clubs history to try and avoid the wooden spoon.

Except for the fact that if we could kick straight for goals we probably would have won.

But yeah, tanking.

It is a subtle art , the players playing to win at the same time as selecting a team and a coaching panel to which is more about development than winning games.

Generally there is agreement with the Shaw strategy of playing younger players to find out what they can do, rather than play top ups purely to try to win games/limit losses.

Resting experienced players like Bird could be a part of that strategy. Also settling for a development coach (Skipworth) rather than an experienced successful forward coach, or having a key position coach or a clearances coach (like Hawthorn have), or a goal kicking coach for that matter.

This could be seen as not really trying to fully develop the team as yet, with perhaps trying to keep things basic and settle for having a crack and try to come close. Perhaps our draft picks and PSD position are taking preference over winning and avoiding the spoon.

If our young players can finish the year mentally intact with more competitive performances to come and hopefully a rousing victory over Carlton in round 23, we get our draft picks, and most of the 12 back (minus Pears if he’s MFB bound) and a full and expert coaching panel next year, then we have had a positive 2016 and can look forward to 2017.

Unless of course we have instilled bad habits into the players.

Im as fkg ■■■■■■ as anyone but it seems like skipworth is a easy target

He cant help accuracy. We kick them goals in the third and we would have been in the game

Catches win matches
Goals kills trolls.

So the team was full of kids , hacks, top ups and soon to be delistees and people are angry with the result?

Bring on 2017

Heartbreaking.

He can’t help, isn’t that the problem?

Chill out, you will all be rejoicing midweek about how great it is to have the no1 pick and who you want to walk into the psd…if anything, that game just exposed the dead wood that needs to be let go at years end.

Blitz filters fail against absolute truth.

I was happy enough with Zerrett, Raz, Tippa, Francis, Lav, Langford, Joe, BJ. The only one who was really dissapointing was Zaka but maybe this is just him, not the first player good enough to get a tag but not good enough to beat it.

The rest are just battlers who are just making up the numbers.

I’m sceptical about the blame our forward coaches get year after year. It just seems like Jackets has got to do a better job in picking some decent forwards at some point.
