Match Review Thread - Umpires def. Essendon

Can we get Leunig to do ours

So he can plaster it with anti vax nonsense?

Get him to sign a waiver

Here's a quote from Wikipedia's article on the AFL Grand Final:
The premiers are also awarded the "premiership flag", a large pennant which is unfurled at the premiers' first home game of the following season. The current flag is blue with the AFL logo, the word "premiers" and the year of the premiership. Although the cup features much more prominently in celebrations immediately following the grand final, the flag has far greater symbolic significance. This is reflected in football parlance, in which speaking of a team winning the flag rather than the cup is much more common; this is possibly the result of history, as the presentation of the flag first occurred in 1895 when the VFA recognised Fitzroy's first premiership win, while the cup was not introduced until 1959 (retrospective cups were awarded by the AFL in 2010 for VFL/AFL premierships prior to that time).

In other words, as their sole Premiership win was in 1954, five years before the cup was introduced, Footscray have never won a cup, but they have won a single Premiership FLAG.

Pathetic, ignorant cretins.

LOL. Good research, well done.

Time to drop the “Western” part doggies. Unless you still plan to move to Sydney.

I still really don't get the point of the doggies banner.. like why you would take the time to supposedly critique an opposition club song.. but in the process give a grammar lesson.

I just don’t even…

I thought all banners had to be approved by AFL? Do they consider this banter? Pathetic effort, still, did give us a laugh. I think the few intelligent doggies supporters around us just groaned.

yeah they do.. but this wasn't offensive.. just stupid. I guess the AFL doesn't prevent stupidity.. or perhaps they were too embarrassed to explain to the doggies cheer squad what winning a 'flag' actually meant.. considering most of them have realistically never seen one.

It’s just a bit of fun. Lighten up. The guy who puts these together is a little out there - when they played Sydney he wrote something about the Westgate being longer than the Harbour Bridge. But it’s all tongue-in-cheek, not intended as a jibe at anyone’s bridge or anyone’s song. He’s the sort of guy who’d poke fun at St Kilda for there being no actual Saint Kilda while fully understanding the etymology of the suburb name. What he’s actually doing is parodying the whole notion of running through a big crepe banner with cut-out words on it. All this hyper-analysing of whether there’s a cup or a flag or a rhyme or not is missing the point.

We proposed using the word "amigos" at one point (no prizes for guessing when) and the AFL rejected it. They're precious little darlings.

Sadly an Essendon supporter came up with it. Not only do we keep them from folding, we write their banners now, too.

Bet that guy still thinks Lloyd plays.

I wouldn’t usually advocate locking a match review thread but this one is getting pretty damn close to being worthy of it.

Probably a reflection of how incredibly dull the second half was.

Umm… don’t think anyone is actually upset about it… so probably a little bit of an over reaction there but the comment “it’s just a bit of fun” highlights the question I have… still not getting how it is funny… in any way. Anyway locking the thread seems like a cool idea.

The banner was the only interesting thing about this game…

I would’ve picked on the pronunciation of the word “premiership” in the song, if anything.

Fair enough. It’s always about context I guess.

Totally understandable, the word amigos is highly offensive - to the AFL. Particularly when it provides a little levity for those brainwashed members of the Cult of Hird while also poking fun at the AFL’s lack of geographical knowledge.

Opposition banners have been weak this year. I was expecting the drugz stuff to be piled on non stop. Maybe they’re saving it till next year.

Do you happen to know why it became referred to as a ‘flag’ and not a pennant like so many other sports at the time (and still) compete for?

“Flag” is a generic term. A “pennant” is a particular type of flag, one that is tapering or triangular, originally used in a nautical context. It probably came into more-general sporting use by way of sailing competitions. Maybe the VFL usage of the word “flag” predates the adoption of the term “pennant” in other sports ?

All pennants are flags, but only some flags are pennants.

Yep which makes it weirder because if you look at the shape of the original ‘flags’… they were pennants. In fact they still use the triangular pennant shape.

Oh well… I’m sure there is some story out there.
