I still really don’t get the point of the doggies banner… like why you would take the time to supposedly critique an opposition club song… but in the process give a grammar lesson.

I just don’t even…
FLAG AND UP DON’T RHYME.
doesn’t matter original song doesn’t rhyme at that section anyway. its a ■■■■ banner by a ■■■■ team with a ■■■■ board and ■■■■ fans.
Also worth noting that in Victorian sporting parlance, footy teams win flags, horses win cups.
We have “flag favourites” in September and “cup favourites” in November.
I’ve been enjoying the Doggies banners this year. Admittedly last weeks wasn’t their best effort, but let’s not get too precious, at least they’re trying to come up with something other than the the usual drivel… “Let’s give it our best shot and win!”.

I would be equally disappointed if our banner had suggested that they are no longer the “sons of the west” but rather a collection of men from all around Australia that live all around melbourne… perhaps their song should start with “sons of the world”
I mean really… I don’t think I have seen a banner actually try to correct a club song before… plenty of “the bombers will fly down, not up” type stuff but this is just plain weird.
I’m not going to lose sleep over it but I just found it strange… and still do.
Here’s a quote from Wikipedia’s article on the AFL Grand Final:
The premiers are also awarded the "premiership flag", a large pennant which is unfurled at the premiers' first home game of the following season. The current flag is blue with the AFL logo, the word "premiers" and the year of the premiership. Although the cup features much more prominently in celebrations immediately following the grand final, the flag has far greater symbolic significance. This is reflected in football parlance, in which speaking of a team winning the flag rather than the cup is much more common; this is possibly the result of history, as the presentation of the flag first occurred in 1895 when the VFA recognised Fitzroy's first premiership win, while the cup was not introduced until 1959 (retrospective cups were awarded by the AFL in 2010 for VFL/AFL premierships prior to that time).
In other words, as their sole Premiership win was in 1954, five years before the cup was introduced, Footscray have never won a cup, but they have won a single Premiership FLAG.

it was still a notch better than Freo's inspirational message to its 250 game skipper David Mundy.
"Congratulation David Mundy 250 Solid games".
Must have run out of crepe paper letters
What sort of career did you have David?
Solid.
What was it like to get confused with Barlow all the time?
Solid.
What’s pav like as a bloke?
Solid.
Poos?
Solid.

I thought all banners had to be approved by AFL? Do they consider this banter? Pathetic effort, still, did give us a laugh. I think the few intelligent doggies supporters around us just groaned.

yeah they do.. but this wasn't offensive.. just stupid. I guess the AFL doesn't prevent stupidity.. or perhaps they were too embarrassed to explain to the doggies cheer squad what winning a 'flag' actually meant.. considering most of them have realistically never seen one.

Pathetic, ignorant cretins.
So many people forget this, along with the non mcintyre finals system (ie no grand final) pre 1933’ish.

Do you happen to know why it became referred to as a ‘flag’ and not a pennant like so many other sports at the time (and still) compete for?
