Match review thread Vs Pies

Goddard might want to consider giving it away

24 disposals at 87% efficiency.

Equal second highest tackles for us.

5 marks and 5 clearances.

Was OK today.

Should've dropped McKenna.

Yep. Would have made all the difference.

Probably won’t be our worst loss this season. After the Geelong game people got carried away. But Geelong did kick 1 goal from something like 14 scoring shots at one stage. Could have been a bit ugly if they had of kicked straight.

Commentary team mentioning comments from Monkhurst “Collingwood care about ANZAC day, Essendon don’t” Bomber doesn’t say a word! Not a word. Thanks mate.

I fractured my elbow today and it’s not the worst thing that happened.

That was due to a very significant extent to our inability to put pressure on them.
They continually walked out of contested situations because our tackles weren’t hard enough to dispossess them, or at least force an off balance or pressured disposal.
Too often we allowed them to keep their arms free and get off an effective handball when they should have been tackled harder and dispossessed.
The result of that is effective disposals coming off contested situations, and fast ball movement and an open forward line.
It is then goodnight.

The pattern has been bad game, good game, bad game, good game, bad game…next week should be a good game and we’ll smash the Boos…I hope. Feel pretty deflated though. Was really hoping for a win. This year IS going to be difficult.

We have been far more competitive in the first month this year than I thought possible. Today wasn’t fun at all, but given the sides on paper, it’s not unexpected as far as I’m concerned.
I thought Luey’s effort was outstanding. Parish was all at sea and will take a lot from the game. Fantasia, Hartley and Walla will be starting 22 next year. They can play and will only get better. Move on quickly.

Missing ambrose

Bugger off Rosseniri, you are not the kind of supported needed this season…

Too often we pinned one arm and they managed a miraculous one handed handball. Awesome effort.

I'll excuse a lot of things this year. I'm ok with poor skills. I'm fine with getting overrun late in games. I'm fine with getting pushed around by bigger bodies. But fk me I want to see effort. I can't accept soft, front-running spuds finding themselves loose in their forward 50 time after time. I don't want to see us chip the ball around a bit before bombing it onto Joe's head when he's surrounded by 5 opposition players. Every fkn time. The number of times they outnumbered us in our forward line, swept the ball away and ran the length of the field without us touching them was staggering.

We were never going to be a good side this year, but today was a hell of a lot more disappointing than any other game so far.

Oh well, at least Carlton are woeful…

They need to be more woeful than our first quarter today next week, if they can do that then we're half a chance.
I'm sick of getting belted on Anzac day

The idea of taking anzac day off us is getting more appealing with each passing year

That was fkn disgusting today

kind of expected, but doesn’t make it any easier to watch. oh well, ■■■■ happens.

Think the forward line made some modest progress in the second half. Given it’s monotonic decline in recent years, I’ll hang my hat on that. It’s a development year

Missing ambrose

I thought Grimley gave us more than Ambrose does. Kicked 2 goals as well.

That has been, by a long way, our worst game of the season in every way possible. I realise we need to stay positive and that we have guys missing and all the rest but far out… that is 3 out of 5 games decided within 10 minutes… 10 freaking minutes!! I’m not Woosha bashing (truly) but how about trying with a ‘flood’ or even +1 in our backline for the first 20 minutes of the game… let the young blokes get themselves up and about first??

I don’t see what they learn other than getting their butts kicked by playing this easily broken zone thing hodgepodge of soft running, arm flapping waste of energy defence. At least man on man they can have no excuses for blokes 20m on their own.

Broken tackles are going to happen when young blokes play… but far out we need two things: learn to tackle ball and all… and try to find an umpire that understands the concept of illegal disposal. The amount of times we tackle and the ball ‘rolls’ out in the direction it was intended so that they could then continue forward was astonishing.

I have got some positives to run through when I calm down enough but right now I’m a little ■■■■■■ off. I expected better today and the fact that we are missing 12 players should not make us complacent about ■■■■ poor efforts.

Dempsey was putrid… just putrid. Conor was just overwhelmed by it all and had about as much impact as last week… which was zilch. I question if we are using him correctly too… he doesn’t seem a natural forward and it doesn’t give you a lot of opportunity to run and create, especially in our forward line. On that, I love Tippa… total crush BUT I also think we are using him wrong as a pure defender. Gets lost a little in the air and isn’t a great mark… I would much prefer to see him on the ball or on the wing where he can run and create and keep pressure on the ball carrier. This move should be made ASAP.

I thought Grimley came in and actually did his job… BUT we didn’t have anyone putting on forward pressure when the ball hit the deck. The 3 talls can work IF we have some actual small forwards (Stokes was especially poor) or the midfield comes and helps (which they didn’t)… if neither happens then the defence runs it out and smartly too… result seen today.

Gleeson on Fasolo and Baguley on Howe was just wrong for mine… when is the last time Howe ripped any team apart? Change needed to be made. Put Baguley on their most dangerous small forward and go from there. Hartley was very decent in the air. Gwilt was actually good except for his 2-3 classic ‘Gwilty’ farkups. The team will be going in the right direction when Gwilt and Dempsey aren’t even close to our best 22. Gleeson had his colours lowered and would want to turn it around pretty quick or a spell in the VFL might be warranted.

Zaka tried his guts out and so did Looney. Cooney was good offensively but if you want to know why the Pies always had a free man… Zerrett and Parish looked a little tired and the latter might need a well earned rest. Langford was again 50/50 for mine… did some nice things but just doesn’t seem to be strong enough to hold his feet yet. I like him as a prospect but lots to work on.

We made the Pies look good… but just like Port… they actually suck so that helps ease the pain.

From memory, we don’t play Collingeood again this year.

Embarrassing being this embarrassed by one of the sides who have so far been embarrassing themselves.
