Stumpf would be very much a project tall I feel. Athleticism without a ton of production to this point. Maybe that’s what we’re after (I’m not sure) but perhaps we go for someone that can provide more immediate impact to fill in that medium sized Edwards/Langford/Stringer hole in the forward line.
I really liked hustwaite in his draft year, tall mid with a lovely left foot kick.
In the hawks doco Mitchell said he really wants to get him in the team coz he’s so talented but they are stacked for inside mids, he even suggested to hustwaite to move to half back to get him in the seniors.
You’d also suspect the hawks development is better than any club in the country, with all the trash they’ve turned into treasure.
It’s consecutive years of losing best 22 players each year, plus trading multiple high picks for single players that has killed our depth. We have been stuck using very late picks to build depth.
For example, each team will get given a second and third round draft pick a year.
From 2017 to 2023 (seven years) we have drafted 6 kids with second round picks, and one of them was us matching Brand at 39. Only two second round picks have come below pick 38. Similarly, we have only drafted 4 kids in the seven year period with a third round pick.
Dodoro traded too aggressively from 2017 to 2023 and it will take a long time to undo it.
Interesting you say that, i saw on midweek tackle the other night Essendon had the opportunity to pick up Sam Davidson (who looks a star at the dogs), but skipped coz dodoro preferred el hawli. I’m happy with el hawli but gee, could have had basically another Durham running around already.
To be fair to Disco, Davidson was playing half forward last year in the vfl and wasn’t pumping out numbers at anywhere near the level Seh was. And we needed a half back at the time.
Davidson’s progress this year as a wing men has been stunning but that’s not who he was last season (though the quality may have been there). He can seriously football though, no question
I’m with you. Thought his disposal in that first game was poor. Can run all day and he was seriously good the other night. You can’t have them all and El Hawli looks the goods too.
I might be wrong on the hand over timing, but Davidson vs El Hawli would have been a decision made after Dodo had left the building right?
From memory Davidson wasn’t an especially hot prospect at the point that the MSD was held, he had a bit of a break out performance against us in the VFL the weekend prior to the draft, but had been pretty quiet before that so it would have been a big call to pick him.
As impressive as Davidson has been, I think El-Hawli still fits more of the criteria in terms of things we are lacking.
We have Duursma and Martin who can run the wings, we are trying to shape Harry Jones into that, Archie Roberts may well become a wing man etc.
El-Hawli has speed to break a line and seems to be a pretty neat ball user. We lack those types.
Also, there has been a few lower league players who have slotted right into that wing role. Clohsey at GC, Riley Bice currently at Sydney. It might be a role where it’s not too hard to find an AFL ready player at the level below.
Not sure, i did think ‘was dodoro still around’ when i heard it, but it was the blonde haired lady from the Herald Sun (i forget her name) that specifically mentioned that dodoro preferred el hawli.
Tom McCarthy is a Richmond VFL half back meant to have started the year very well.
From big footy: I watch all games that Kane McAuliffe plays and this fella has really caught my eye 2 weeks in a row, a real aggressive runner off half back, good size and excellent skills, a real metres gained type running back,
The old “Match Ratio”. I’m surprised it hasn’t made an appearance on the ladders yet, as that was how they ordered the ladder when they had an odd number of teams back in the day
