I don’t know on Fletcher, but the little on Blitz sounds promising. Really comes down to his 2018 form, a lot of players move up/down in that year. I was really just throwing out some possibilities, and our list management team should be much better placed to make calls like that.
We probably will delist both Bird and Howlett, and we know Jobe is retiring. If we get Miles with a third round pick, it really wouldn’t bother me.
I see your point, but you would have to acknowledge that it’s based on your assessment of his talent and capability. We clearly have completely different perspectives on his value.
He at least gets involved in the game. The biggest knock on him was he hasn’t built his body up to a point where he’s ‘AFL ready’. I think he still needs another 5 kg of muscle but whilst he’s not AFL ready, he’s certainly doing his job at VFL level.
During u18s he was always involved as an outside midfielder and I don’t recall his kicking efficiency being a weakness. He just wasn’t exactly a player who was noticeably cutting up the opposition.
He’s a good cheap option. Wouldn’t cost more than a fourth round pick (even that might be too much).
What are peoples thoughts on a player such as Nick Suban from Fremantle? A Victorian who is an unsigned unrestricted free-agent who is only 27. He has had some problems with injuries but I still think he is a more worthwhile target than some of the names eg. Miles and Matera being mentioned here.
Subtext: My goodness, Essendon has done such a poor job of trading over the last 15-20 years, I’m sitting here trying to talk up Nick ■■■■■■ Suban!
According to the statistics sites, and confirmed by my own eyes, the Essendon 2017 midfield was about the 4th worst in the league.
Take out Jobe, and all the other experienced depth, inject the inexperienced Langford, and I think we start 2018 with a great chance of being the worst midfield in the league. Or just a single muscle tear away.
But bring in Miles, and he could potentially lift us back to being 4th worst again. What’s not to like about that?
From what I’ve seen, which isn’t nearly as much as others
He’s got the pace
He’s got the skills
He doesn’t get involved nearly consistently enough to really warrant being on an AFL list
I’d add to this Mathieson. I know he isn’t in vogue around here but he is out of contract, a good size and for a 20 years old and has shown plenty. Averaging 3 clearances a game with a best game of 7, averaging just under 20 possessions with a year high 32 against GWS. Brisbane are vulnerable and he is best mates with Darcy, let’s have a crack and he and Langford can push each other for the spot.
I’m also keen to add another small/running defender to bolster our stocks but allow McGrath to move into the midfield - Mckenzie from GC I’d look at, Bews from Geelong, Roberton from St Kilda.
I know footywire has Mathieson uncontracted, but on the Brisbane site it says they’ve signed him 'til the end of 2019.
Wouldn’t be against it if it could be done, though.
