Missing/crashed planes, and other aviation mis/adventures

AA2546 LAX-MEX resuming operations on November 5th, available for booking as we speak so you should be able to request them to add that back into our booking. They may not be proactive about it so you will need to push the issue

When the route was announced in Feb there was definitely plenty of surprised people. Only planned at this stage as a NW seasonal and with the QLD tax payers kicking in I do wonder if the route will last more than the 1 season as often when the government handouts stop airlines tend to bail.

Can’t see that when searching freshly.

Change #4 just came through, for the DFW-LAX leg.

Oddly, if I go to the AA site, they are still selling my current trip, so my only guess is they suddenly realised I wasn’t American and might not clear customs in time.

FFS.

I’m looking at flights from Orlando back to Melb next year & one of the options on AA is DFW-Mel direct at just under 18h flying time. It gets me back home quicker than via LAX but wow thats a loooooooong time in 1 plane. Any chance Albo can ring up Joycey & get me an upgrade?

Something is very fishy with the whole booking on that trip.
AA2546 LAX-MEX is definitely resuming on November 5th but I see it now has a departure time of 0802 whereas before it was 0930.
The MEL-LAX QF93 doesn’t arrive in LA until 0810 (although it’s often nearly an hour late) so your AA flight would have already left. Even at the old time I’m certain that it’s not possible to do in just over an hour.
It’s a bizarre one

The original QANTAS flight from MEL was leaving at 1040, to arrive 0600 with a 2:08 transfer. That got delayed to a 1200 departure, which made the original LAX-MEX flight rather difficult…

Yeah, bizarre.
I can’t find any case notes on approvals for QF93 to be re-timed to a 1040 departure. QF93 departed MEL at 1230 last year and then moved to 1155 departure on April 1st this year and then on the 27th October that was changed to 1200 due to slot capacity reasons. I’m wondering if Qantas requested the 1040 slot and it was knocked back meanwhile they had been selling flights for 1040. That sort of thing happens frequently with airlines but it’s a PITA as it now throws your whole itinerary out with either needing to spend near on 24hrs in LA and then pick up the LAX-MEX flight or take the DFW option. Most people I help book travel avoid LAX like the plague and try to fly into another US port and DFW direct from Australia is very popular because of this

I also got offered options back via Dubai/Perth or London/Singapore or Santiago/Sydney, but they all had their own faults.

I should have asked, Business or Economy as that would make a huge difference on options too

Nah, I’m a cheaparse.

Trying to work out if a 7hr layover at Heathrow can be made useful. I have not been to Windsor Castle.

If Economy you want either the least hours possible overall or several smaller flights preferably that are during the day. The timings will be quite varied and the some economy products are miles more comfortable than others too

Ha, I can also change the out trip, and this is less painful.

Should I trust the second one (1:45 layover) to be enough time?

Qantas flights to the US are the least punctual routes in the fleet. They are always 1-2hrs delayed arriving. It’s a tight squeeze if everything is on time and any delays means you will miss the connecting flight. Good thing is as it’s on the same booking it’s up to Qantas to get you on the next flight or make suitable arrangements. If you do choose the earlier one if everything goes fine then that’s great but if it goes bad they should put you on the later flight

Arrrgh…

EDIT: eventually worked out that just because they provide some specific alternative flights for you to choose from, it doesn’t mean that those flights are actually bookable.

I just booked tickets to London from Sydney with Singapore … 55 minutes between flights at changi … I’m like well they let you book it’s now up to then to get me to London!
