Boeing actually halted new deliveries of the 787 after that incident and are contemplating an investigation into the fuselages of the 787ās.
I know Boeing actually cut back on some lightning protection measures in the wings citing costs and to speed up deliveries but they maintain that it hasnāt compromised safety
Iād take whatever Boeing say with a large grain of salt, when they talk about safety.
Not really true. My uber was in an accident on the way back from the airport last year!
My cab from Melbourne airport blew a tyre , lucky there was a service lane.
True but lightning generally doesnāt cause a problem and on average every aircraft is hit at least once per year. This particular one was hit early on into a 11hr flight and didnāt cause any issues.
I remember speaking to one of our senior Qantas captains about lightning and he recalled a time on a 767 flying into HKG and they were hit around a dozen times in 10 minutes coming into land and on inspection they found 11 lightning marks on the fuselage and wings
All this reminds me l have a few flights coming up in the next few weeks. Not that l am a nervous passenger.
A while back I was at a function where a drunken Polish LOT pilot was having a good time until the small hours.
He said he was flying out the next day.
I marked LOT as never to fly.
The presidential flight was operated Polish airforce.
Interestingly Iād probably prefer to fly LOT than Air France!
LOT is a lot safer since it turfed all itās Russian airliners. I have very vague recollections (as a child) of being on a LOT flight to Frankfurt - some four engine turboprop beast that was intent in shaking itself to pieces and half the passengers being travel sick!
LOT are very decent airline these days.
If you are worried about pilots being intoxicated then avoid US airlines
My first trip to Vietnam was on a Russian airliner, a Tupolev of some sort operated by Vietnam Air. When the thing first fired up a dense vapour blew out of the aircon vents, but it was just nice and chilled air. We flew out of Don Muang, Bangkok to HCMC. I have taken well over a hundred flights and to this day l have never been on a smoother flight. On take-off we couldnāt tell when we had lifted off, which is not so unusual if the pilot knows what they are doing, but the surprise was at the other end, when we couldnāt tell at what point we had actually touched down.
Mind you I flew Aeroflot in the Soviet era. Quite an experience, passengers coming on with their chooks in baskets, placing them in overhead storage not of the locker type.
That was as a tourist.
For work we would occasionally be banned from travelling on certain airlines. One month this one No, next month OK.
And often two different rules for internal domestic and international flights of the same airline
looks like the fedex plane had line of sight of the whole time.
I wonder why it kept on that line when it could have easily changed.
Flying Finnair from Helsinki to Oulu in 2006 (regional flight on an A310) there was a mid-stop where a bunch of passengers came aboard with their pet rabbits. These were only ālooselyā containted and we had rabbits running around the cabin for the 20 minute sector to Oulu.
I had someoneās pet dog on the floor next to me on a flight from Rio to JFK, not even on a lead .
No danger I was told, itās only a small pet and well trained (well, except for toilet traning)
It was foggy, they would have not seen them until the last moment.
