Major outbreak currently in North America of a highly pathogenic avian influenza strain too, FYI. Minimal current risk to humans but infections in mammals have been reported (in red foxes), which raises potential for emergence of variants adapted for transmission among mammalian hosts.

Yup. Around 40 million commercial birds lost so far and it’s doing a real number on wild populations too. Ducks, geese, and raptors worst affected. Only one reported human case.

Yeah, I knew of the human case (happened around the same time as the H3N8 case in China), but hadn’t really followed the outbreak in wildlife.
