Movie Genre - Top Ten Crime Films

I loved him in Chinese Take-Out.

He’s one of those actors that can appeal in any type of role.

It is easy to forget the older films but you are right the ones you have listed deserve more discussion. Especially anything with Bogart in it. The African Queen is up there with my favorite films.

As far as crime films go Fritz Langs M should be part of the discussions and also The Third Man although that might be considered Mystery.

I’d classify The Third Man as crime + war, even though set a few years after.

Harry Lime in the sewers of Vienna, running zither and yon. Dum de dum de dum de dum, dum de dum de dumde dumde dum etc.

The Third Man is as close to film perfection as you can get.

I was just about to comment that there wasn’t enough love for Dirty Harry

In no order, just what’ve come to mind:

Taxi Driver
The Conversation
Goodfellas
The Godfather I and II
The Silence of the Lambs
Strangers on a Train
Dog Day Afternoon
City of God

As always, I like to see folks put older films (pre-1960) on these lists as I still have tonnes of catching up to do there.

Ace Ventura
Ace Ventura 2
The mask
Dumb and Dumber
Jack and Jill

There were crimes in these movies and

I highly recommend The Last Don. Although that was technically a mini-series so not sure it fits.

The Untouchables and Chopper will be in there.
As well asThe Godfather 1 & 2. They both deserve to be in there.
Donnie Brasco should be there.
Good fellas as well.
The Usual Suspects as well.
Heat.
The Fugitive.
Man on Fire. I still love this movie to this day.

Also…
From Dusk Til Dawn deserves a mention even though it may not quite make the top 10.
Arlington road is unlucky.
As is Blues Brothers and Oceans 11.

I’m resisting analysing it - the dream, that is.

Maybe you just need a trip to Vienna

Good call.

Ha! I’ve always considered Dusk till Dawn as a vampire film, never really looked at it as a crime flick.

Two films that I had forgotten about that probably deserve to be on this list. The Vanishing is a Dutch film from 1988 that was remade Hollywood style a few years later with Kiefer Sutherland and Sandra Bullock. The original is ten times better. Another film I watched a few years ago (The Silence 2010)from Germany about two child abductions and murders separated by 23 years that happen in the exact same location. I wouldn’t want to give anything more away than that but I am shocked it has not been remade.

Good point.
I hate the vampire part.
Right up until the Salma Hayek dancing, it was in my top handful of movies of all time.
After that, it’s a totally different movie.
