A lot of bands started off as punk and moved into more mainstream music mainly due to their management. The sex pistols went from punk to gimmick band (ten pole tudor). Blondie were definitely punk when discovered. Green Day the same. Very hard to stay punk when you’ve got a million dollar contract waved in your face.
But what is punk?
Double time beat with a massive amount of attitude and ■■■■ you to the man. Question authority!

Any watching PUNK on Vice 8.30pm??
Produced by Iggy Pop it’s a ripper. 4 part series and Part 3 tonight.
Minor threat and Fugazi featured tonight.
Fugazi are one of the greats and not mentioned here yet.
Just to maybe get some different names in here, top ten “punk” bands I totally went nuts over at some point and still love to bits:
Buzzcocks
The Clash
The Meanies
Screeching Weasel
Descendents
Jawbreaker
Gang of Four
The Ramones
Bad Religion
Wire
In 74 no one wore leather jackets, played 2 minute songs and sung about sniff’n glue.
They were as punk as you could get.
And then you have the Beastie Boys.
The Fonz?
Other way around.
Either way their total creative output was 1 album of 11 or 12 tracks.
Meh.
To be serious tho.
Only Lou Reed
Pistols
Saints
New York Dolls
Buzzcocks
Ramones
POWDER MONKEYS
Radio Birdman
Stooges
MC5
Mach Pelican
Bit of a mix, and despite all the hoopla, the pistols album is literally the bollocks IMO
No.1 for me.
I’m just gonna throw some names out.
Osker
Rancid
The Clash
The Ramones
Bad Brains
The Germs
US Bombs
Sick of it all
Six ft Hick
Last one can be a bit controversial so I’ll make it
Converge
Jeez they’re an interesting band.
The Wipers
Minutemen
Germs
U-Men
Cosmic Psychos
Mission of Burma
METZ
Just a few faves that haven’t been mentioned…
I heard the slow part in The Saddest Day and I was hooked. I don’t love everything they do musically, but I love the way they do everything they do. I also wanted to have bands that delivered well beyond the music and Kurt Ballou’s hands have worked on so many other interesting records.
It ain’t Offspring or Greenday.
But this is. IMO.
I haven’t listened to all their albums yet, but my favourite so far is Plagues, from No Heroes. Blows me away.
Set in the 50’s
No Pennywise?
