MUSIC GENRE - Punk - TOP 10 bands

I’d count them as new wave, personally.

It’s a tricky one.

I’d say Def yes, but others maybe no.

New Bomb Turks

Has anyone even heard of these guys? If I could see a band RIGHT NOW, it’d be these guys.

Nah, no way new wave, they did evolve in the 80’s, but that’s about the only comparison.

Hence “personally”.

If I’m listening to Sonic Youth, it’s more likely to be on a playlist with stuff like Pixies, Husker Du and Deafheaven - lots of strange guitar noise, not hugely rhythmic, not hugely reliant on lyrics, and a bit slower paced.
But that’s me, personally.

They’re not a band that easily fits into a pigeon hole.

A lot of my favs already listed.

Would like to throw in the following I haven’t seen listed yet.

  • Anti flag
  • The Living End
  • Flogging Molly

Even each album would be hard to pigeonhole, each one has at least one or two really classic foot stamper on it as well.

Yeah. They’re definitely on the fringes of punk, but they’re not A Punk Band.

Not going to claim they were punk BUT no Neu! and the motorik pulse and punk would have sounded a lot different. And Johnny Rotten acknowledged the influence.

They started as no wave, forged the alternative sound and became lumped with grunge. I don’t really think the term punk suits them too well but they are right there alongside it.

Yep, many variations on a definition. I’m tempted to say, for me, it’s early mid-70s to early 80s, fast, hard, anti-establishment, generally (not always) low production values and musicianship. But then there are bands/artists who convincingly carried the ethos well beyond those days. Then others jumping on the bandwagon, somewhat fraudulently. First to come to mind for me would be:
Sex pistols
Stooges
Clash (though did a lot of stuff I wouldn’t call punk)
Dead Kennedys
Saints
Birthday party?
Hard ons
Black flag
Radio Birdman

With ‘Grip’, they were the first punk / new wave act to break thru where I was living at the time (Auckland)

There’s a Punk doco series currently on Vice 31 Monday nights, watched it last night and surprised no one has included Bad Brains, DOA or Circle Jerks (not nessarily my picks).

Loved the Dead Kennedys and always considered Pennywise a skate band (I’m an exskater), love their stuff.

Back in the day I was fond of the Snivelling Shitts, and not just because of the name (although it did help)

And I loved this. Didn’t know when I bought the LP that it doubled as an anthem for fascist skinheads (I gather it’s now a popular soccer chant for Charlton Athletic amongst others so I’m not sure if it’s redeemed itself) I’ve got an aging video of my three kids, all now post 30, pogo dancing about the lounge room to its accompaniment when they were toddlers.

PS Still got the vinyl
