I see a few posts reveal an Depeche Mode appreciation in this thred so this band may appeal to a few posters and have gone largely unnoticed in Australia but have a bit of a buzz in Germany and even here in the Philippines. Nation of Language wear the influences pretty close to the surface but have the tunes to back it. Very DM, especially the first 4 albums.
Another band from the same era as DMs heyday are a German band called Camouflage who had a hit in the US with Love is Shield and were very big in Europe. A very much C tier name drop here but my wifeās best friend in Germany is the drummers sister. Lovely chap, he and I got thoroughly sozzled one night as we hammered Spotify with lost Eighties classics from Germany and Australia and he regaled me with stories of being on Top of the Pops in the UK and touring the States, not surprisingly Boy George could be a bit of an ass. His sister doesnāt have quite the same found memories as she had girls camping out in their front garden given he was a bit of a teen heartthrob at the time. If you are partial to some early DM you could do worse then to check out either Nation of Language or Camouflage. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rfl3a13ry94
OKā¦ the greatest musical expression of this and last century, Keith Jarrettās fully improvised āKoln Concertā is about to record itās 50th birthday, 24/1, so expect a lot more āinterpretationsā - there are so many already.
Calm down, Iām such a Jarrett nut I can barely find a place for Koln in his top ten. Mind you, Jarrettās top ten is rarefied musical air. Still itās the ONE, greatest selling solo piano piece of all time, and the one so many worship and the one that lead to them making a movie about the performance which they reckon hits the cinemas in March - Iāll believe it when and if I see it - which I will if it does, even though I know it will fall short.
Like I said there are already many(too many versions?) of this iconic piece and expect a truck load more this month, but this is pretty OK, close to the original and I do admire that she performs all the movements, not just the most famous first movement.
Hope Jarrett, who can no longer play due to a series of strokes, enjoys all the attention. Wouldnāt when he was younger, but he has mellowed. Maybe.
Thatās very sadā¦ especially if there were any master tapes involved.
Didnāt always love his work as a producer (often overblown stadium rock), but as a mixer, he was right up there with the Lord-Alge brothers for getting a big, crisp, clean sound.
Bit slow on the uptake as I donāt give much time to new bands but I have just caught on to Amyl and the Sniffers, been a very very long time since I have seen a front person put on a performance like Amy does, and theyāre Aussies to boot.
