50Mps is the best we can get where we are are now, and we are consistently in the high 30’s to 40’s even in peak times. Had 100Mps in Hobart and that was nice, but this current speed has never been found wanting for us. Mind you, as you connect more devices, and the kids get into online gaming, you’d probably want to up it 100Mps.
just read about them on Product Review.com.au.
AMAZING reviews - will look into them as an option now. Thanks!
Yep, I kicked off with Aussie. They focus more on providing extra gates at peak times, and keeping speeds at Max 's rather than being the absolute cheapest, but are still very competitive.
Is actually 100% Oz owned, employing folk just up the road here in Latrobe Valley. Unfaultable customer service.
Internode for us. Just hooked up to NBN, with the usual ‘there’ll be no downtime…oh yeah we needed to call in a cherry picker and excavator and it’s a long weekend…’.
But they’ve been easy to deal with. No contract, probably cost a bit more.

ok so a few things to note.
when talking ISPs try to find reviews for your distribution area.
TPG/DODO are good in some areas, but shocking in others.
this leads into; find an ISP that upgrades their CVC in a timely manner when they hit capacity. Aussiebroadband as a whole won’t sell once they hit 80% capacity until that area gets a huge upgrade (eg they stopped selling in kings park for 6 months until the 10gb/s link went up).
for your actual uses 100mb would be the safest bet imo if oyu have multiple netflix streams, etc.
FTTC requires a feed in device, so make sure you have an extra wall socket /powerboard available.
I chatted with one of their sales reps and he said that once they reach 80% they “buy more”.
if they can, which is why i brought up kings park, took telstra for ■■■■■■■ every to upgrade their link.
I’m currently at Beech Forest in the Otways, which supposedly has “the NBN”. I don’t know what it is exactly. Using my brother’s wifi system I did the speed test and got 7.5 mb download and 4.8mb upload.
Just out of interest I turned off wifi and used my Telstra 4G phone. 33mb download and 20mb upload.
you’d be on the “fixed wireless”, which isn’t much good. They don’t run fibre, way out in the sticks.
Yeah, I saw that assurance too.
I was with Optus cable, paid for 50 and was getting between 45mps on a bad day and up to 92mps
I had the NBN forced on me just before Christmas and took up a 50 plan on Telstra because Optus don’t do NBN.
Best speed I have had up until today when I was visited by an NBN technician was 24mbps down a usual speed between 4.5 @ 7mbps.
The minimum of 0.1mbsp was achieved on Christmas Eve, tried to do a speed test, failed at the the first 4 attempts and the fifth took 25 minutes.
It is now operating at 46mbps but since the changeover the WiFi on the TV and printer no longer work but that could be just Telstra.
Myrepublic ftw
That’s an outage of some sorts, not normal throttling.
Also the wifi should still work. Unless they forced you onto their bodgy router. And even then, it should still work, you just probably have to set stuff up again?
We’re on NBN (3284)…I’m on Telstra and the node is probably 250m away.
It was a bit patchy about 6 weeks ago, but been fine for a while (and Port Fairy networks get very overloaded from mid-December to beginning of February…I’ve been getting about 40 down, 20-25 up for a while.
That “throttling” happened twice yesterday, tapering off from normal speed to absolute zero and back up to 45mbps 10 minutes later.
NBN sent a technician out to set it up.
I’m with Optus cable and pits for NBN we’re getting installed near my house so I’m assuming Optus will force me to switch soon.
Anyone know much about NBN/ADSL/Telstra cabling/installation etc?
I had the NBN rollout guys at my place today. They were due to install NBN cable to the house, but they were unable to find the cable connection at the street end. Apparently Telstra don’t have any records of where it was installed - my connection doesn’t seem to be in any of the pits on my street.
Unless we can find it, they’re going to have to install a new connection in the pit, then dig a trench up the length of the property (which is very long, very steep, and which I’ve spent a great deal of time and money revegetating with natives) and lay a completely new conduit. Which seems ■■■■■■ silly since we know there’s a perfectly good conduit there already because my current ADSL cable goes through it…
Anyone know how I could go about finding where the cable conduit is at the street end? Are the any tricks, or is there anyone who would keep records of this stuff, or is there anyone I can get to come out and find it for me using some sort of magical cable-locating gizmo?
There are detectors for locating underground cables. I don’t have any experience with them but for example see :
But your connection is almost certainly in a nearby pit. I was in a similar position to you albeit in a smaller scale I suspect. I did find ours eventually by lifting pit covers and having a geek. Our conduit was blocked but that’s another story. What sort of nbn technology are you getting? Hfc?
Yeah, it’ll be a HFC connection when it happens. The nearest pit to me is half full of gunge so maybe it’s hidden in there somewhere. Or it might have been in plain sight all along - the adsl cable to my place is a particularly heavy duty one cos my house is so far back on the block, and there’s no matching cable in the pit. But of course it’s possible that the pit end is a regular cable and it’s joined to the thicker one somewhere in the middle…
The cable for our last place was eventually found in the pit, after much hunting and hair pulling. Seems it was covered over by mud and was only discovered after a fair bit of digging. If it had of taken much longer to find we were going the new run option. Those pits are very dodgy bits of work. Good luck.
I’d put money on it being in the closest pit. Hopefully you can find it and it’s not blocked such that they can run rg6 coax thru it for hfc.
You could also post on whirlpool nbn forum. A lot of collective knowledge over there. They have a hfc installation thread.
