Next Generation Academies

No I doubt they would take ours but could eat into ours

Oh that’s a damn good point actually, polynesian’s aren’t nga, one of the weird quirks of the system.

I know Rodan grew up in i think oak park, coz mates in my year at school use to be in the same cricket team as him. He was always a talented footy player so was kinda the local celebrity at the club even as a teenager. I don’t see why the sons would really have any affiliation to Adelaide at all.

You never know, maybe there are fond memories to seeing dad in a port guernsey. Maybe port roll out the red carpet, one of them might nominate.

They’ll nominate if it’s their best chance of getting on a list, a bit like Chris Johnson son with us but the other way round.

So is he definitely NGA with his parents backgrounds, I’m confused now?

Also has there ever been a current player with an umpire as a Dad?

Very rare to have an ex player as an umpire, so I’d say these kids might be the first.

If the kids are as filled with joy about football as the dad I’m sure they’d do well.

Essendon could corner the market for Middle Eastern and Fijian players if we play our cards right

He’s definitely NGA, but I don’t think anyone can figure out why. I’m pretty sure it’s because David was born in Fiji, and the criteria is apparently;

Next Generation Academies
Level: AFL Club Program
Gender: Male and Female
Age: 11-19 years old
Cultural Background: Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander
Multicultural background:

  • Player born in non-English speaking country
  • Or has at least 1 parent born in Asia, Africa or Oceania or
  • Both parents born in another non-English speaking country (not Asia, Africa or Oceania)

I think the Oceania criteria is new because it used to only be Africa and Asia? But would include Fiji which also suggests Polynesian players might now be eligible too @Bully ?

Not sure mate, i know Polynesian players weren’t included coz Melbourne were complaining Ah mu isn’t eligible this year and clubs were asking for a change, meaning the younger ah mu brother could be eligible in a couple of years.

So maybe the change happened recently, but it only applies post this year or next?

With regards to rodan helping with us capturing the Polynesian market in addition to the middle eastern one, there are a lot of polynesian’s out in the roxburgh park area. I’m unsure if that’s in our zone, i know craigeburn is coz that’s where merhi plays, so i would say likely. I feel it’s an untapped community and they’re pigeon holed to rugby, so I’d like to see us do some work in this area, as they’re very talented power and speed athletes and it could be another gold mine for us.

Yeah, it’s definitely new. It’s not in the 2025 AFL League Rules, which is just Asia and Africa.

As an aside, I’d probably work on those criteria because about half the population of Oceania is a country the Australian Football League might be familiar with called Australia.

Got a sneaky suspicion the AFL might change the Father Son / NGA rule to allow the Rodan boys to join the umpiring ranks. That’d spice draft night up.

Can guarantee that if Cody walker goes to Richmond that the AFL will rapidly shut down the dual eligibility for FS/NGA kids.

Can also guarantee that if he goes top 5 to the Blues that the AFL will ban FSs from being eligible in the top 5.

Sweid continues to rise up the draft boards. Today he had 21 disposals, 4 inside 50s, 13 tackles and earned 5 free kicks.

hope not. That’s just a knee jerk reaction.

How long till he re-does his knee? Everyone else is getting injured, only a matter of time…

So am I wrong in picturing Sweid like a meatball type operator, like Prestia?
