We saw a curve and for once got ahead of it?! Maybe I’m dreaming…

I thought I read early this year Pacific kids were included with an adjustment, so when I saw it again the other day I thought it was old news being rehashed, I may be wrong though.
Captured in the covid check in at venue data.

Given how young some of the academy players are, those lines are just going to take off.

Is that academy player games for that club, or just total games? Are Steele’s 185 games for the saints credited to gws, the saints, or nobody?

Games for that club.
Otherwise Mozzie’s 2 games for us would show up in Hawthorn’s academy stats.

Interesting to how that correlates to arguably the top 4 clubs consistently at the top for the past decade or two. It’s a big advantage if you can acquire that almost free talent. It won’t be as much in the future though.

Fair, although Connor Downie played 2 games for the hawks, and that’s not visible.

Wasn’t Jiath an NGA pick? He was Cat B.
Maybe that chart doesn’t include NGA picks?
It must, how else could we have academy show up on ours?
I had a look. It’s games played by players taken in the national draft to the team they were academy or F/S eligible for, at the club they’re eligible for.
Not sure if I missed it. Did the AFL officially announce and confirm the changes to next year onwards for matching father son and academy bids?

So Jiath and the other NGA/Academy kids add as Cat B’s only because those clubs had priority access don’t count? That seems like a weakness in the chart.

Brisbane about to go off the chart with their 3 FS players each looking like potential 300 game players.

How does this work? How can you guarantee someone you will select them? For example, if we promise El Achkar we will select him, and then a club bid on him at pick 10, we wouldn’t be able to pass? That would only lead to opposition clubs abusing that guarantee and make you use an earlier pick than is appropriate.
It would only make sense if the guarantee applies only if he is not bid on.
It’s not quite correct.
In 2022 and earlier (which may stick in people’s minds because of the Daveys) the rule for father son nominations was that if you nominated a player F/S you were guaranteeing them a spot, specifically on the senior list. You could choose to not match a bid, of course, but if no bid came, you were required to draft them onto the senior list. You couldn’t nominate them and then say “actually, nah” if no bid came. If you didn’t nominate them for the draft, and no bid came, then you could automatically add them to the rookie list.
As of 2023 that no longer applies to F/S picks. The rule now is that you nominate them (and they nominate you), you may match a bid, and if no bid comes you may add them to the rookie list. It would be kind of mean to nominate them and then not add them even as a rookie, but it is allowable.
I mention that because I had to repeat the guarantee part in the draft night thread in 2022 about 400 times when people were talking about just taking Jayden Davey as a rookie if there was no bid.
Academy and NGA nominations work differently. Technically I don’t know the NGA nomination rules because they’re in accordance with “the Determination for the National Draft Bidding System” which us plebs in the public don’t have access to. My assumption is that they’re materially the same as Academy nominations. The way those work is you nominate a player (i.e. submit a form saying “we have rights to this player in the upcoming draft”), then you may match a bid if one comes. If no bid comes you may draft them as normal, automatically add them as a cat B rookie (or a normal rookie I guess), or not add them to the list at all.
Which is all to say that the nomination process for Academy and NGA players is really just notifying the AFL that you think you have a claim on the player, and them confirming it. It provides nothing to the player. I would imagine teams don’t bother filling out the paperwork for players who they’re not remotely interested in, but there are probably players on the edge who they fill out the paperwork for and then see how things go.
Just adding these in here for history/information.
