Great decision!
Hopefully Xavier is smart enough to only do this after he had found a suitable funding alternative. Expecting a big announcement on the sponsorship next year after this.
I guess I am probably a bit different to people on this one. I think gambling is a dirty industry that is predatory in its advertising and unprecedented in its attacking of unsuspecting citizens to rape them of their money.
BUT
It’s legal and makes a truckload of money, so while it does that why not milk it for everything it’s worth until we are told to stop or we can find a larger more reliable more ethically responsible source of income.
I hope that’s what we have done.

This is 100% how I feel.

This is what Xav had to say to that:
“This decision wasn’t made lightly, particularly with the revenue a wagering partner can deliver,” Essendon Chief Executive Xavier Campbell said.
“We have a fantastic group of commercial partners and we will be directing our energy to nurturing these existing relationships, as well as establishing new partnerships with like-minded companies.”
Really proud of the club for taking a stand on this - It shows some serious balls.
I also love that, people on here, some of them barely out of high school, could possibly turn this into something to whinge about.
PS - Why is Humbert not in this thread telling us how much he’s putting on Hawthorn tomorrow?
Poker machines are the purse killer for many families with a gambler. Hope that is the next step.
All bets are off.

Oh hang on…
Congratulations to the Essendon Football Club on cutting their ties with gambling agencies and the first AFL club to do so. It is a very moral and brave decision. It is also a wonderful decision, gambling because gambling is a blight on the community. Addictions are predatory in nature and ruthless in their demise of moral integrity.
Good to be in the press for something positive for a change.
As long as we are not losing out its fine. Im not too fussed about betting agencies sponsoring clubs, their money is as good as anyone elses, clubs have to survive some wayFound the SANFL Supporter!
Just concerned, the short fall has to come from somewhere. The bottom line of the club means far more to me than some moral crusade against gambling. As long as the club isnt one cent worse off im ok with it
Really??
Wow!
Near year’s marketing slogan…
Essendon - Don’t bet on us
“Whatever The Odds”
“Well the gambling man is rich and the working man is poor and I ain’t got no home in this world anymore”
"Well the gambling man is rich and the working man is poor and I ain't got no home in this world anymore"
‘no mow’
Yeh good move.
Now if only we could end our current relationship with the AFL head office.

How about Scientology, then?
The end justifies the means…?
A good stance but a token one all the same.
Betting agencies have some sort of sponsorship with most clubs. If it was worth anymore than $150k-$200k I’d be staggered.
Can’t see us giving up the millions in pokies revenue anytime soon.
