Overrated/Underrated Sitcoms and the science of comedy

Absolutely love this show.

From the old to the new there are some great memories in this thread. Yes Minister and Blackadder. Black Books. Coupling. Arrested Development. Rick and Morty. Peep Show. And I just finished Derry Girls. They are a few of my favourites.

Oh and Community if it hasn’t been mentioned.

Should arrange a blitz viewing and put on a buffet…

This is where you lost me. You bring this up, and then can’t name a show that has this. I have never seen a show where a husband was beating his wife up on camera, and everybody was laughing. Unless you know one.

A few cheap laughs out of the US Office but it makes my stomach churn that people refer to it as the default one.

Red Dwarf? A bit niche I suppose. And only the earlier seasons

I enjoyed How I Met Your Mother back when it first ran. Haven’t been back to watch it since though.

Agree with Futurama and Rick and Morty also. Not sure if it’s classified as comedy, but as a sci-fi fan I enjoy Star Trek Below Decks.

I’ll check them out.

Get Barb to do it.

I loved that show in its first run.
It was strangely comforting, right down to the theme song.
As you say, lost me in later seasons.

Star Trek Below Decks is like Galaxyquest. Simultaneously the best Star Trek fodder going, and damn funny.

Kryten : A superlative suggestion, sir. With just two minor flaws. One, we don’t have any defensive shields. And two, we don’t have any defensive shields.

Friday Night Dinner is a pretty good UK comedy

The writing was on the wall when one of the co-creators left saying they were all out of ideas. It became pretty patchy after that. I loved the spooky opening theme that alluded to how alone they were, rather than the upbeat one which was admittedly a fun number.

From a while ago - Ripping Yarns and People Like Us were both consistently funny.

More recently - I got lots of laughs out of Fleabag, Bojack Horseman and Mr. Inbetween.

The change in perspective, the change in scale in the opening titles, was brilliant.

You don’t do nuance, do you? That is in no way what I said. I did not suggest anyone was getting beaten on camera. Plenty of shows have the male character belittle or denigrate the female character in the name of comedy though.

I ask you, is the scene from RotN something you consider as worthwhile “comedy”?

I see them as very different shows but there’s no doubt for me. I always call the US one the ‘American Office’. It wouldn’t have been made or been successful without borrowing a lot from the original version, and without the ongoing input of Ricky Gervais, who is basically a genius, IMHO.

Speaking of whom, Extras, Life’s Too Short and Derek were all excellent.
