Heard good things, but haven’t caught up with it yet.
Tropic thunder didn’t do that though.
Airplane/ Flying High wouldn’t even make it today, but it didn’t really punch down on anyone, it just had somewhat edgy subject matter
kk.
The whole thing is an interesting discussion because the genre is so incredibly wide. Some shows are straight sugary sitcoms, some really push boundaries , some are really defined by the (often not funny, and not meant to be funny) surrounding framework.
I’m still not sure how I’d rate Afterlife, for instance. Some of its poignancy was sublimely brilliant, some of its humour excellent, some not. It’s probably underrated , but for many people it likely doesn’t appeal at all.
It’s very good.
edit: To elaborate in light of saladin’s deeper rumination. I think it is a great show. How you rate the blend of comedy and pathos might vary.
Flying High was hilarious. Still love it. Absurdities abound.
It’s the best comedy movie of all time in my book
Same with Derek. Agree with your premise. I think it’s an amazing skill to have people laughing while they’ve got tears in their eyes (not from laughing). That’s skill.
My young niece and nephew have seen Flying High, and they loved it.
Great comedy is timeless.
Well you see, the vast majority of people obviously disagree with your viewpoint and that makes it successful. No show is popular with everyone, they get popular when the majority like it. So just because you didn’t like it doesn’t make it overrated.
No ■■■■ Sherlock.
Team Seinfeld!
Then why make a silly statement?
It was average at the time (but as already highlighted by others still very popular) but you’re right… it hasn’t aged well. At all.
It’s a shame that Perry will be remembered by most for ‘Friends’ and not some of his other work. Still it would have paid the bills for many years into syndication.
I am not sure I would say it “hasn’t aged well”. To me the point of the show was to capture the time and place it represented, not to be anything more than that. It captures the time it was made exactly as it was: a group of 20-something friends in New York in the 90’s and watching them sort of grow up. It was never created as a show that would reflect 2023, it was a show to reflect the 1990s.
Chandler went to Yemen to get away from his girlfriend. Would have been great to do a catch-up episode on how he got back
I don’t really understand the whole ‘hasn’t aged well’ thing.
There are plenty of people who weren’t born when the series ended who not only watched and enjoyed the show, but can tell you whether they’re a Phoebe or a Monica.
That’s…just ridiculous longevity of cultural reference.
Wasn’t anyone going around saying they’re a Hawkeye or a Trapper John, twenty or thirty years later.
I think Friends straddled the line well between easily digestible chuckles for the masses and genuine wit. And it was all about the unique characters and how they worked as a whole, and the talented cast.
Just because I didn’t like the show, doesn’t actually mean it wasn’t a good show.
Fundamentally I think it made people feel good because they related to the romantic notion that their friendship circle was just like that.
Plenty liked it, though I wasn’t one they still must have been doing something right. It’s all just entertainment.
And yet MAS*H remains one of the greatest shows of the television era.
It’s mix of humour and pathos remains unmatched (imho).
Absolutely, but I’m talking about aged well.
Try getting a teen to watch MASH now…
