It’s become a good thread. Now Fawlty Towers is no good. Funnily enough, in my years of teaching English as a second language I’ve come across people running courses to help students understand humour in English. The shows commonly used to do this? Friends and Fawlty Towers.
That’s really cool.
I haven’t looked into the…science of comedy, but I do like hearing people talking about it.
Surprise, subversion of expectations, but I heard Hannah Gadsby talk about rising tension and then release, which causes people to laugh even if they don’t think something is ‘funny.’
Every time I’ve had to do any fixing around the house, without fail, I’ve said the phrase “lick of paint, lick of paint”.
Fawlty Towers is up there with the best comedy series of all time IMO. People poo pooing it are delusional.
It’s the absolute pure chaotic, cynical essence of John Cleese distilled, bottled and harnessed for 25 minutes of tight tv pantomime. I can’t think of many other shows that hit almost every punchline it makes with such force to date. It’s unrivalled still in that respect.
You only need to look so far as Robin Williams to see the influence on other comedic acts of the time.
I can only imagine what it would have been like to watch something like that when it came out in the 70s.
Yep.
Feminism is important but the writing, humor and execution of both is out of this world in the bundy residence.
Left shows like friends and Seinfeld in its wake.
The key to a good comedy is if you can find it just as funny as audio only.
You can go to sleep listening to it.
I’ve found it here, the difference between Sydney produced comedies or NSW based ones and those comedies based in Melbourne or Victorian communities.
A Sydney friend with much the same tastes as me , the same sense of humour, raves about some comedies that are a turn off burlesque OTT for me,
It’s a bit like US and Brit comedy series of the same base, for me the Brit ones are superior and funnier.
Why not “Mind Yor Language”?
Married with children is one of the funniest shows of all time. Would love to see it come out today and see all the softies get offended by it
This is all interesting. I think it needs a separate thread though…
Comedy is dead
Thread is back on track
I made a topic. Mods feel free to do whatever you need to do…
Friends was a great social experiment.
Get 6 attractive people (Two of which were 10s), and have them move around a bit, looking all pretty. The writing is irrelevant.
Genius.
I wouldn’t have been too upset if Ross had accidently fallen into a wood chipper though.
I may agree with you.
You think those two statement are the same?
You think violence against women is only beating?
Afterlife kind of started out well, then it tragically turned into typical Ricky Gervais muck humour. It lost its understated cleverness. Pity.
WHAT SHOW???
Any love for the Detectorists? I really enjoyed that. Beautiful opening theme which gets worked into a hilarious open mic night to great effect at one point.
Are you going to answer the RotN example?
Anyway, I have work to do…
