That weakens Geelong’s position, if anything

I totally agree that they could use Hartley. But he’s probably worth about a second rounder on his own. So a deal involving Kelly would need to be something like 1st Rounder, 2nd Rounder + Harts
I don’t think anyone’s saying itd be anything less
2 x first rounders or first+ second + player
He was going to go to Geelong and would have got their via FA. The compensation Adelaide would have received was weaker than the deal they did with Geelong so they did a trade. if he wasn’t a FA, Geelong would have had to pay more.
The player being eligible for FA doesn’t mean anything about what the player can and can’t do. It’s what the club gets back. If they’re out of contract, or alternatively if they’re still under contract, the players can go where they want and the club pretty much has to
If he wasn’t a FA, he could’ve walked to the draft and Adelaide get nothing - so any offer Geelong make is, by default, the best offer. Hence the original club is likely to snap up that offer even if it’s unders. The player not being a FA puts the buying club in a stronger position, not weaker.
Read on one of the Dustin Martin threads on bigfooty that a person was told by a senior person in afl administration that their view was dusty to Sydney or hawthorn and Kelly likely to stay at gws or choose Carlton or essendon. R we actually any realistic chance to land Kelly?. Or is this all talk etc.
Sounds like a legit source to me, time to get excited.
This is what the AFL want, or will orchestrate?
Dusty to GWS, then.
In your non FA scenario Geelong wouldn’t have wanted that to happen, or he could have gone to another club, so Geelong would have had to pay up… and imo more than what they did in the real. I agree with what Sugar Winton on this
2 first rounders at a minimum would be the starting price.
LOL. They are grown men, not 13 year olds.
Bye saucy.
Almost lasted a couple weeks.
Would we give up two first rounders for Kelly?
Pick 18 and 18 seems fair
I think they’d want more ‘value’ on this years pick trade than next, knowing full well we’d be bolstered considerably by Kelly coming to us (assuming he wants to).
I can’t imagine Hartley would particularly want to leave? He’s been in Victoria since Collingwood picked him up (5 or so years), missus is from here, and just bought a house here. And he’s contracted for next season. And Walla.
And also what was said previously is that you’d have to think GWS would go after Hurley or even Hooker first if they were after a defender.
What? There’s nothing a non-FA can do that a FA can’t do. A restricted FA can walk to the draft exactly the same as any other uncontracted player. The offer/matching process is completely optional, a player isn’t obliged to go through it if they’re willing to just go straight to the ND and/or PSD. So I don’t see how being a FA possibly puts the buying club in a weaker position.
It didn’t work for Collingwood when they got Treloar.
Their midfield is way stronger than ours and Howlett is not getting a game with us. Not a chance in hell that they’d have Howlett as part of a deal. Hartley maybe.
Plus they could get Howlett for nothing when he’s delisted.
Umm what?
if a player is a FA they can go where they want. If a player is contracted and wanted to leave and the club isn’t happy with the offer they can say no like Gibbs and Carlton. If a player wants to go to club x and is contracted, history says they get there but the club can refuse the trade and send the player to the draft.
Dangerfield wanted Geelong and only Geelong. He was a FA so he could get there. If he wasn’t a FA, Adelaide could have said I’m not happy with Geelongs offer they need to improve it or you can head to the PSD. There would have been enormous pressure on Geelong to improve the offer, he is the best player in the league, there would have been rival offers that became public. Paddy if you want to go to Melbourne then both Rich and Ess are offering two op 10 picks etc… Of course there is no garauntee but I presume in this case Adelaide would have driven a better deal.
