I’m speechless.
You know, they really do look less dangerous !
I’m going to place a cutesy one on my pet Black Mamba.
Ducks are into recycling - flies.
So they get let out of their run about 6 hours a day and snuffle around eating snails etc, and dropping duck p00 everywhere. Flies get attracted to the droppings, and the ducks waddle with head low down at grass level for surprise (I want to say ‘coming in low out of the rising sun’ like Kilgore in apocalypse now, but that’s being silly). Anyway you have to see it to believe it, but they strike like a goddammn snake, snaffle the hovering flies on the wing, and gobble them down like a barfly eating peanuts.
It occurred to me that among the grain and pellets and snails and worms in the p00 that is attracting the flies is, well, flies.
couple of good videos to watch in the link as well
Was driving past the wetlands today and noticed on the side of the road there was a bird of some kind looked injured and was flapping around on the ground. I went back and it was just laying there and couldn’t move. I called wildlife victoria and then they asked me to send a photo to them and they identified as a coot which is native. They asked me to take it to the vet so got it in the car and took it there. The vet already had an email sent from wildlife victoria which was all pretty organised. It was still conscious but think it would at least have a broken wing. I really hope it survives. Animal lives matter as well.
Good work @Tezzalenco. We had these on our property & always called them purple swamp hens. They have the cutest black fuzzy little chicks who were so vulnerable. We were always thrilled if any survived to adult hood. We’ve rescued many different native animals & it’s always heartwarming to know you’ve helped & if you’re lucky find out they’ve survived.
Thanks @loyalandproud. I couldn’t leave it there once I saw it. If it survived the day the foxes would have got it at night. I have taken a couple of dogs to the vet in the past that I have found injured that have been been barrel rolled under cars and it is always good to get the call that they have made it and the owners are so grateful.
Good job. Thank you.
On the subject of birds we have got a bird living in our bush in the backyard which has its nest there and has eggs in it. We can walk up to it and it just sits there. It comes out during the day and sits on the pergola and sings away. Our dog Rocky was obsessed with it for a while but they have both learnt to live side by side.
Blackbird?
Does it have a nice song? I reckon it might be a grey shrike-thrush.
Wow! Video footage of rescue is incredible
Not sure. The colour is different.
Yeah it does have a nice song.
We have them at our shack in south Gippy. They are great little things. Had a pile of cut - down branches and got to clear them on a ‘fire preparation’ permit. Thrush was hanging around grabbing slater’s etc every time I dragged stuff to the trailer. Beautiful if slightly drab birds.
