Peter "2MP" Wright - SLIGHTLY COOKED, PETER?

Struggled with the bubble environment, the bipolar senior coach and shortened quarters which dulled his best asset (endurance)

Hopefully all in one season…

I think we look like having a competent forward line with tall depth and bit of flair in Stringer and Walla. That’s better than a potentially incendiary forward line that never got on the park together. I probably think of Adelaide for a few years where they had a very effective blend up forward without any truly exceptional players, just hard working and varied in their roles and ability to play them. Peter is, I hope, a late developer who would seem to have the tools and the rig

Surely not Adelaide when they made the GF? Their forward line was stacked with stars then.

Brown and Wright were not similar costs, the gap isn’t ā€œnot too much more expensiveā€. There is a huge difference between a second rounder and a fourth rounder in terms of quality. We need all the quality kids we can get, giving up a second rounder (or equivalent value) for Brown was an absolute no go.

You’re also assuming Brown had any interest in going to us. He may have wanted a club he thinks will play finals.

Forgot about Betts and Cameron but let’s say that’s Stringer/Walla. Then you’ve got Walker, Lynch and Jenkins who were all very good at their best but not truly exceptional. Point is they worked well together and didn’t rely on one freak spearhead to build around. But I’ve probably been found out here and should’ve used a more pedestrian example the more I think about it!

Do we know for certain that we didn’t make inquiries with Brown?

Maybe Brown’s preference was Melbourne and choose them over essendon?

26 games, 33 goals, delisted in 2024.

Well maybe they didn’t have any superstars like Buddy but just about all of them were elite in their position.

  • Betts was the best small forward in the comp.
  • Cameron his understudy, not as good as he has been at Brisbane but he was up and coming.
  • Walker probably top 5 KPF at the time
  • Jenkins kicked 40 goals or more 5 times! (62 goals in 2016)
  • Tom Lynch was probably best in the league in his lead up role.

They had all those blokes in the peak of their careers (bar Cameron) and were easily the best forward line in the league. To be honest I thought we had the potential to have the best forward line in the league with Daniher, Hooker/McKernan/Stewart, Fantasia, Walla, Stringer but injury absolutely screwed that chance.

He also lost a baby during the year, and was publically dropped in the same week

Don’t entirely agree on Walker, my impression was he was flaky even that year, but geez Jenkins got a hard time on this board for how reliable he was! Kind of my point, even though I could’ve chosen a better example, that we look like being better served by a bloke who will get on the ground, can chop out for Draper who can rest forward, in a more settled forward line that has some kpp depth and might actually be able to settle and function properly. It may take a couple of years, and may be just wishful thinking, but I like the 2MP recruitment and I don’t feel as hopeless about our prospects up forward as I have for the last couple of years - injury riddled and never settled. I reckon Stewart will come good in 21. So, all in all I’m basing everything I say on blind hope and intuition. Not sure why I’m posting to be honest!

Again this guy is 2 and a half years younger than daniher. Didnt get on the park last year because they preferred Day as the foil to King on the gc. I don’t get why but he would have almost gotten a gig at 80% of other clubs last year, fell out of favour hard. Hope the kid can prove some haters wrong. He’s played 65 games for 85 goals, I’d be happy with ā‰ˆ1.3 goals a game as well as a chop out ruck. Daniher has played 108 games for 190 goals (ā‰ˆ1.8). He’s not a world beater but fu k we don’t have many other talls coming into their prime to rely on. Again turned 24 at the end of last year!! So hasn’t played since he was 22!! Because he hasn’t had a game since 2019. I like this pick up for the cost and think he has plenty of upside! I may be wrong on him but we should not be relying on any of our 1st year players this year and allow them to develop and blood them when we get some injuries. Cmon Peter, use your ginger powers and show efc what you got!

Also in danihers first 70 games he kicked 108 goals only ā‰ˆ1.54. Marginally better than our so called useless peter wright. Back him in at least for this year, give him 20 games and hopefully reap some rewards for a fresh (hasn’t played in a year/not injury related) 24 year old kpf

I have faith in 2MP, I’ve seen him play a lot.

He just needs to have more of a presence for someone his size in that position and crack packs etc.

Upgrade on 2020 smack which wasn’t hard

Peter Wright
Age 24
Cost 4th round pick
Salary ~$300k (after GC pay part)
Potential upside: pick 8 at break out age for KP players. 8 years potential service.
Potential downside: headspace not competitive enough, replaced by younger players in 2 years.

Ben Brown
Age 28
Cost 2nd round pick
Salary ~$550k
Potential upside: former AA, best lead up forward in the comp if he can recapture his form
Potential downside: serious knee issues, so 3 years of good output or less. Game style doesn’t match the type of KPF we require.

All in all, we know our window isn’t open in the next 2 years, so there’s no point spending extra on Brown who is nearing the end of his career. Wright at worst is a cheap temporary option while the new kids develop, at best is a competitive player during our next flag tilt.

Would people please stop comparing Wright to Daniher. Wright is not worthy of cleaning Daniher’s boots yet alone being compared to him.

Daniher kicked 69 goals and won a B&F at the age of 24. He was about to take the competition by storm before his injury. Wright has been nothing more than an average player.

I know that we all want Wright to be a gun, but he will not be anything more than depth. Jones and co are the future…I hope.

You ever talk about 2MP like that again, and you’re heading for a knuckle sandwich.

Gold Coast would have delisted him if he wasn’t contracted no other club were remotely interested except for Essendon.

I hope he proves me wrong but he’s another McKernan

You don’t actually know any of that for sure
