Peter "2MP" Wright

I’d like to see him pull the ball in once he has taken the mark. Too often he leaves it hanging out there and give the defender a split second to punch the ball out of his hands. Umpires have tend to call play on.

he gets absolutely mauled and doesnt draw many frees. he needs to learn from curnow how to draw frees. curnow is great at throwing his body to make it look like hes been held or to make sure the umpire does see the infringement.

This. It’s incredibly frustrating. If he got paid just half the free kicks he deserves defenders would have to change their approach and he’d start taking more marks too, I reckon.

I do hope this guy has a good aggressive year, and gets his goal-kicking accuracy back to his general high standard. Makes the world of difference to us if he can be a presence in the air.

Hes not a bash and crash player and never was and never will be., Last year he had to change his role to ruck so we dont know what or if he was conditioned to be able to switch to that role without planning for it, or the impact this had on his form. No doubt there was some effect

I think blinking at impact is actually fairly common, as it is for batsmen right up to test level. I read somewhere that you brain can’t process/react to the last split second of visual information anyway, so it may not make a lot of difference. You have tracked the ball and decided what to do by then. But the less time you blink shut, the more chance you have to respond (before or after impact), so it might be good to see if the blinking can be reduced by specific targeted drills?

Just listening to Peter interviewed on bomber banter , it may have been already mentioned but I couldn’t be bothered reading 200 posts, I was just so impressed with his knowledge and thinking about the game and I see him as a real leader .
Hope he goes well this year

Could be? Benefit of the doubt? He just drops too many marks when in a contested situation especially since he has such strong arms. Just a slight nudge - knock seems to be enough for him to drop it…

And he doesn’t take too many clean marks in contest so having your eyes closed cant help…..

He‘s had his ups and downs with the Bombers but I believe in him. Wright is still a great forward and with ex sun teammate Fiorini in the team that could motivate him more them 2 could really gel together.

We‘ve already seen what Peter Wright can do next year could be a career best for him as long as injury doesn‘t get to him like the previous seasons.

I completely agree Wright is a great leader and with the experience with him he can help lead our team to glory. The leadership core is getting stronger

I’m pretty excited to see how we set up in the forward line this year. Hopefully delivery inside will be either more accurate, or faster, allowing the forwards to be in better positions. On top of this, if both Kako and Huss are crumbing well, dropped marks may not end up in the oppositions forward line as often.

I think people over estimate how many contested marks players take.

Last season, and based on players who played more than 10 games.

Sam Darcy was a freak with 3.12 contested marks per game.

The next closest is max Gawn on 2.26 then Harry McKay on 2.17 being the only other players over 2 contested marks per game.

2MP is 16th on the list at 1.47

Lower my expectations - is that what you are saying?

That’s probably because he gets that many opportunities, his average is high

Probably a better measure would be contested marks taken / attempt…

Wright is a pretty good bet to average close to 2 goals per game, but only if he plays 20 games or so and is injury free. People underestimate the importance of having a run of games and its impact on a player’s form.

Also, re his marking and how much interference he gets, I would like to see him take a leaf out of Curnow’s book. He gives a lot of wrestling/mauling early in the contest, then when his opponent responds in kind as Curnow goes at the ball, he gets a free kick for his opponent interfering. Wright just goes for the ball pretty much from scratch and wears whatever his opponent does to deny him balance and a jump at the ball. I know they practise it at training, but he needs to get it into his game more.
