Photos you‘ve taken

Not sure whether the twig at the top is a bonus, or not.

One off the hip tonight. Lasted maybe thirty seconds.

Looking at buying an Action Camera and after a bit of research I have just about settled in on a DJI Action 4, currently $469 at one of the local retailers.
Does anyone on here own one or consider the latest Go Pro’s or something else a better option ?

A few shots that I had taken at the Grampians a couple of months back.

I can’t give specific info on the DJI 4, though that is competitively priced against the recent GoPro cameras, and the online reviews seem universally quite good.

The other challenger to strongly consider would be the Insta360 Ace Pro.
However, this camera is currently significantly more expensive than the $469 you can obtain the DJI 4.

This Youtuber does a good comparison of the main 3 options…

I own the 2 recent releases of GoPro, the 11 and the 12.
Image quality is great during daytime hours, falls away in twilight, and struggles at night (without significant manual tweaking).
The DJI and Insta are better at low light !

If i was to give general information, i would say really think about how you are going to use the camera.

What are the mounting options you will be using ?
How easy is it to to flip from a chest mount/or backpack strap mount, to a tripod/or gorillapod, or to a selfie stick, or to a gimbal even (if you want a more professional result) ?

How easy is it to change a battery if you are out on a day trip or long day hike ?
How many spare batteries do you need ?
Do you need/want ND filters ?

All of the above are less than convenient on a GoPro, and i have had to purchase additional mounting plates in order to simplify the process.
Even then, battery changes are a major hassle if using a Media Mod, which i do.

The DJI has a magnetic mount, which is so convenient.
Just find out if the mount is secure enough for extreme stuff.
Like out in the surf on the “Glorious Gold Coast”, on a mountain bike, trail running etc…

I’ve just picked up a D5300 second hand off marketplace after shooting on an F80 for a couple of years I’m looking at taking more shots and affording to make mistakes. I’ve just got the 18-140 lens it came with. What should I be looking at for a couple of extra lenses to learn on? I enjoy shooting portraits, nature and landscapes so quite broad…

Nifty Fifty!

Teaching the missus I find a fixed focal better to learn on. Sometimes a zoom gives you too many options with what to take. A fixed lens makes you look harder for the ideal shot.

It’s a DX sensor so you may prefer the 35/1.8 over the 50/1.8 . The 50 will be good for portraits but could be a bit tight in some situations. Or buy both, second hand copies are plentiful .

And if you’re in outer eastern Melbourne you can borrow mine if you like. I’ve an old D200 that doesn’t get a heap of use atm.

For wildlife, you’ll have to spend a bit more. Depending on the use case, maybe look for a 70-200 / 2.8 . Older sigma or tamrons would probably do.

I have a D7200.

The 50/1.8 takes great shots but for me its use has been quite specific. As Sal said, it’s often too tight. For shots of my kids running around in parks it’s excellent.

When I go out hiking and go for landscapes, farmhouses etc. I can’t beat my Sigma 17-50 f2.8. It doesn’t cost an arm and a leg, is a touch bulky to carry around, but fits the most occasions for me including doing a decent job with the portraits.
