Plane crashed into DFO Essendon

Last time this happened was before I was born

Holy shitt!!

Not good, 5 confirmed on board …high speculation of casualties on the ground. Hell.

By some miracle, fairly sure everyone survived the one your’re referring to, doesn’t look like they will here though :frowning:

Looks very bad. Can’t see any of the five on the plane surviving. Let’s hope no one on the ground was injured or worse.

No on-ground casualties from the radio report I’ve heard. Crash was one hour before DFO opens.

That’s lucky, that or crashing into the Freeway in peak hour could really have multiplied the casualties

Spotlight have accounted for all their staff thankfully

It’s strange that it appears as though he tried to turn. When there’s any engine failure or similar in a plane that size the instructions are always to keep gliding straight and try to find a spot to put it down. Turning the plane dramatically increases the risk that you’ll spin out of control.

However the airport was so close he has obviously been unable to avoid the perfectly natural instinct to turn around and go for home.

There was one in the 70s or 80s where a family in a house in Airport West were all killed, bar the father who was at work.

So it was at the entrance end, rather than the DFO building which is about three or four hundred metres away. IIRC there's Spotlight, Adriatic, another furniture place (Focus) and then JB in that area.

It’s possible there was a mechanical failure or that the pilot knew he was going down so tried to avoid some people. Also possible he had a heart attack or similar.

Yeah that sounds about right.
A lot of the impact (reportedly) was made to where a loading dock is if that helps picture where exactly it hit

Yeah both possible. I’m just assuming engine failure given that the flight was only seconds old. But who knows

Catastrophic Engine failure is the term they are using … cops etc.

Think it failed, & he turned tight & tried to make a dash for the , (albeit pretty bloody small), rear car park, and hit the rear of the DFO just before reaching it.

Edit: Looks like the rear, I’ve never been, but it only looks big enough for a staff car park.

Full of fuel on takeoff. Not good

theres speed bumps everywhere, and natures strips, not an ideal location but better than a building. The part they hit is where the fwy onramp is to go towards the city.

Also one in Niddrie early mid 90’s.

Ipec used to fly loads out of there. Since the late 90’s it mostly been private jets etc using it.

Only casualties those on board.

4 US golfers going to king island

Why specifically referred to as golfers?

Why specifically referred to as US?

Perhaps because they were American Golfers?
