Player Weight Profiles

I know this gets discussed a bit in other threads, but I’m not sure if there’s one for this topic.

I was thinking about Essendon in relation to their contested game/aggression levels, and specifically the Geelong game springs to mind. That game really showed our team’s weaknesses, and from a list management point of view, it seems to me that we may not have enough larger sized mobile players. I know this gets brought up a bit, but looking through the two teams lists, it seems stark.

The only players that fit into the larger/non key position/mid style role ( I’m thinking around 190cms 90kgs) from us are probably Setterfield 192cms/87kgs (bit undersized), and Stringer 192cms/92kgs. Laverde and Langford are thereabouts, but are now plugging key position gaps. Langford also lacks aggression, and is now great up forward. Perkins and Tsatas are young but should get there in the next few years hopefully.

Looking at Geelong though, I mean you can see it when the teams play, but these player profiles, it just seems nuts. Tuohy and Danger are enormous. Rohan, Menegola, Guthrie, and Atkins all fit the profile. Bowes seems small at Geelong, but would be one of our bigger players.

In contrast we have a glut of really great midfielders that are undersized. McGrath (not really a mid), Parish, Hobbs, Caldwell (plays big), Merrett (he’s a rock in reality), and Shiel. Any club would want these guys, but as a group they’re too small. IMHO the sum of these guys is much worse than they are as individuals.

In a fast moving game it can work, well even, but how do we get away with it in finals?

I’m not bashing our drafting either. I feel it would’ve been a mistake to not take Hobbs in the draft with that pick. I’m also probably in the camp that our clubs main issue is lack of development, but I’m not sure how we can get the team right without trading some of our mids out to try and get a couple of larger guys in.

What are everyone’s thoughts on this? If we were to trade, then who? Could we simply put some of these guys in the gym for a bit?

Apologies. I haven’t posted in a long while, and I don’t think I’ve ever started a new topic so sorry for any mistakes.

I reckon we’ve lost weight. We were bulking up particularly shoulders and arms but has come back quite a bit.

Good post, I agree. I like a lot of our players in there, but we look so undersized when you take out a fit Stringer & Setterfield. Lock Perkins, Caldwell & Hobbs in the gym over the pre-season.

20 years of the same bloke running the list I think. It even reflects in our forwards and defenders, we always pick the “athletic” types that are 190-195cm and 90-95kg. Hawthorn have Lewis and kozzy, Sydney have amartey all 195 and close to 100kg and cost a pack of chips. Can’t remember the last time we drafted any players like that

Big bodies aren’t created in the weight room. The weight room is important, but more important is for the player to have the basic body structure. You can’t turn a lightly-framed player like Zerk-Thatcher into a mountain like Stephen May.

Physical stature is one component (I do miss the era of Jobe + Hocking or Myers), but imo equally important is we’ve had very few players in the side with a genuine hard edge.

Since the saga we’re probably slinging them Berocca’s and the odd multivitamin while the other mobs are on the good stuff

I really hope missing half the year with a shoulder is the reason hes struggling im worried that we only got one good year from him

The graphs/models need to document the relationships between height, weight, and age, or this is just another thread sooking into the wind.

Diet and training can get you pretty close.

People on here get too caught up with trying to work out whether it’s development or recruitment when it comes to understanding the state of the list.

It’s both. That’s the problem.

We’re recruiting undersized mids, undersized third talls, skinny KPP and hoping that they don’t get injured so we can develop them but they invariably do get injured, so we need to keep trading and drafting to fill the same gaps rather than move on to other list needs.

Our players are too skinny. Except the ones that are too fat.

Geelong has a great program for building players up physically. We should try to emulate that.

Ok, here is some data. I hope you can read it. I had an OK looking table going on ChatGPT however it didn’t copy across well. If someone gets excited they can put it in a chart. Also, I put Wardlaw in just out of interest.

It seems clear to me that…

  • we need a few more 190cm 90kg ish players. Perkins and Tsatas will help a lot, but it still seems like a pressing need.

  • by the age of 23-24 your pretty close to as heavy as you will plus maybe 2-3kgs.

  • Parish plays much bigger than his size.

  • If Wardlaw was available at our pick I feel like it would’ve been a mistake to pick him.

Player weight at various ages…

Geelong

Dangerfield 189cms - age 22 91kgs, age 26 92kgs, Age33 91kgs
Guthrie 187cms - age 23 84kgs, age26 86kgs, age 30 87kgs
Menegola 189cms - age 24 88kgs, age27 89kgs, age 31 90kgs
Touhy 187cms - age23 91kgs, age 27 91kgs, age29 93kgs, age33 94kgs
Rohan 189cms - age22 88kgs, age27 92kgs, age32 92kgs
Atkins 180cms - age23 85kgs, age 27 86kgs
Bowes 189cms - age 25 85kgs

it caught my eye…
Bartel 187cms - age 32 87kgs
Caddy 186cms - age 23 84kgs

Essendon

Lots of small mids…

Parish 180cms - age22 80kgs, age26 81kgs
McGrath 180cms - age25 83kgs
Caldwell 183cms - age22 83kgs
Shiel 182cms - age25 82kgs, age30 84kgs
Merrett 179cms - age23 80kgs, age27 83kgs
Hobbs 183cms - age19 80kgs

Big enough…

Stringer 192cms - age24 92kgs, age29 92kgs
Setterfield 192cms - age25 87kgs
Perkins 188cms - age21 85kgs
Tsatas 187cms - age18 80kgs

Just for interest…

Wardlaw - 182cms age19 79kgs

Well done on that table. You are dead right: a player is not going to put on much weight after age 22 or so. So those who say Zerk-Thatcher etc need to hit the gym so they can bulk up are just plain wrong.

And Perkins and Tsatas are never going to be bulls. Tsatas is still very young, so he might get to 84 or 85 kilos, but that’s not bull size.

If you use BMI as a measure, you can see we are a smaller team than Geelong. I’ve ranked the players on each list by BMI.

Geelong has 17 players with a BMI over 25. Of those 17, only three are less than 182cm tall. We’ve got 9 players with a BMI over 25, and of those nine, seven are 182cm or under. So we don’t have many solid players, and most of the ones we do have a really short.

It’s interesting that some of the players that we consider to BBM in Martin and Perkins are right down the end of the BMI scale.

Channeling my inner Scott Steiner:

THEY’RE FAT!

Interesting that Stringer is mid-range, contrary to perceptions.

And I always thought that our jumper has a slimming effect.
